THE HOME ORCHARD
Now is the time of year to give
some thought and attention to the
orchard. Perhaps no other equal
area on the farm means so much
to the family except the garden.
But to be of value the trees and
vines must be cared for. All fruit
trees should be gone over with the
..pruning shears and the limbs thin
ned out and cut back. Do not allow
limbs to overlap and rub against
each other. Keep the head of the
tree open and the limbs growing

cutward so all the fruit will be ex
posed to the sun.
In cutting branches be sure that
the cut is made smooth and close
back to the main limb. Never leave
long stubs to remain on the tree.
They often die and may cause a
diseased or doughty main branch.
They are also very unsightly.
When the pruning work is done
an application of dormant spray
should be thoroughly applied to con
trol the San Jose scale. This spray
should be applied at once. Then it

j This is a good spray against fun

, Both these sprays are very mex

eases. there is no use wasting time,
and money in setting them out.
If new trees are to be set in the
cre hard they should be set now just
as soon as it is possible to get them
cut. In fact they should already
have been set. They live much bet
ter when set before the winter rains
I come on and growth begins earlier
|i n the spring. Of course if rains
■ are plentiful in .the spring they may
l:ve and do just as well as fall set
trees. But if the spring weather is
dry the chances are much against
them.
All varieties of grape vines should
be pruned by the middle of Jan
uary as sap starts in them early in
the spring and late pruning will re
sult in severe bleeding.
In all my life I have not known
as many as a dozen people who do
not like the scupperning grape. It
is one of the easiest of all grapes
to propagate and it seems that there
would be a vine in every back yard.
But in fact I don’t believe there is
one back yard out of every twenty
five in this county that has a vine.
I have known of land-holders going
year after year to another farm to
get seuppernongs when they are ripe
and yet make no effort to carry
home a rooted vine.
Resolve right now if you haven’t
a vine on your place already to
plant one before the winter is oveiv

NFARLY MILLION POUNDS
POULTRY SOLD IN YEAR
MONTHLY CO-OPERATIVE SALES

THIS SEASON
Athens, Ga.—A total of 900,000
pounds of live poultry was mar
keted during the year ot 1926 j
through cooperative live poultry i
sales held under the direction of
county agricultural agents of Geor
gia, it was stated by the marketing
specialist of the Georgia State Col
lege of Agriculture. With over 844,-
000 pounds sold through these same
agencies up to Nevember the first
this season prospects indicate that■
last year’s excellent record will be
surpassed. The rapid development
of commercial flocks of poultry in
Georgia has been one of the fea
tures of recent years. The carlot
sales have been instrumental in get
ting the surplus live birds to mar
ket at satisfactory prices. The sales
have been made by the State Bu
reau of Markets, Atlanta, Ga.
In those counties where most con
sistant progress with chickens has
taken place there has developed an
interest in the production of early
friers and fall laying pullets. To
obtain friers during the high price
months of March and April, it is
necessary to get an early start in
hatching, late December and early
January settings of eggs should be
made.
The county' agents of northeast j
Georgia have been giving special j
attention to poultry and dairy prod-|
ucts. At.the annual Farmers Week
and Marketing Conference to be j
held at the Georgia State College'
of Agriculture in January, T. L. !
Asbury, district agent and C. A.
Bryant, County Agent of Stephens
county, will head up the discussion
of plans for 1928. From the pres
ent outlook both poultry and egg
marketing will increase in 1928.
