MORE ADVERTISING IS
URGED AS BANK NEED
AUTHORITY POINTS OUT THAT
PUBLIC CONFIDENCE MUST
BE RESTORED. BANKS TOLD
SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN
Pittsburgh, Pa.—“lf every strong
bank in the country would courage
ously and properly advertise at this
time, public confidence would be tre
mendously strengthened,” is the
statement made by Edwin Bird Wil
son, pioneer financial advertiser and
president of Edwin Bird Wilson,
Inc., New York, before the fifth an
nual advertising exposition and con
ference of the Pittsburgh Advertis
ing Club.
“Too many bapks have discontin
ued their advertising during the de
pression,” said Mr. Wilson. “Too
many have decreased it. Too many
have failed to begin it. There may
be conditions where silence is golden,
but in general the situation calls for
the public assertion by banks of con
fidence in themselves. The now
stronger-than-ever commercial banks
can lead the way to business restora
tion by using this sound method of
re-establishing public confidence.
Some have kept up their confidence
building work all through the de
pression. They will be the first to
feel the benefits.
“When we boil things down to
their essentials, there are two enor
mously important economic prob
lems in America today: (1) to pro
vide steady, profitable employment
for all who wish it; (2) to provide
safety and profitable investment for
all money that a fully employed peo
ple wish to save out of the wages of
their work.
“Advertising leadership should be
yoked with banking leadership, to
promote real investment and to dis
courage speculation. Let the big fel
lows speculate if they will—but with
their own money! Let us help the
millions of small investors, who in
the aggregate far outweigh the big
fellowfe, to conserve their savings and
lend them for permanent prosperity.”
