JACKSON SCHOOLS WILL
SPONSOR HALLOWEEN
CARNIVAL DURING MONTH
The Jackson public school will
sponsor a Halloween Carnival in late
October, the date and program to
be announced later. Plans are now
being made for this event, which
promises to be one of much interest
tc the children and their parents.
SEWING FOR ORPHANS
On Wednesday the ladies of the
Methodist church met in the Sunday
School room and spent the day sew
ing for the children of the Decatur
Orphanage.
Machines were furnished by some
of the ladies and a large number of
garments were made to be sent to
this orphanage.
At the noon hour a lovely luncheon
was served, each one attending bring
ing some dish.
Altogether it was a very happy
gathering.

The regular monthly meeting of
the Larkin D. Watson Chapter U. F\
C. will be entertained at the club
house on Thursday afternoon, Octo
ber 12, at three o’clock with Mrs.

Moore, Mrs. Horace O’Neal and Mr.'.
R. L. Grant hostesses of the occasion.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR W. M. U.
OF BAPTIST CHURCH
Beginning with an instructive and
inspiring program on “The Need
of the Word in South America” on
Monday afternoon, the ladies of the
Woman’s Missionary Union of the
Baptist Church are observing the
Week of Prayer for Home Missions
set apart by the W. M. U. of the
Southern Baptist Convention. Each
afternoon some special topic is dis
cussed, these topics covering the dit
ferent phases- of the work helpful to
the organizations as they carry on
in response to the calls for service in
the Home Fields.

ENTERTAIN THEIR FRIENDS
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Singley enter
tained a large number of their rela
tives and friends Sunday with a bar
becue, given in honor of Mrs. W. H.
Singley’s birthday, which was a very
enjoyable event, being held in the
grove near the home. A beautiful
white cake holding sixty pink can
dles adorned the center of the table.

McDonough, Ga.—Mr. and Mrs. J.
O. Maddox, of Luella, announce the
marriage of their daughter, Miss
Mary Emily Maddox, to Hiram Bai- '
ley Turner. The ceremony was quiet
ly solemnized by Rev. J. F. March
man, of Hampton, the pastor of the
bride, on Tuesday. The young cou
ple left for an extended motor tr.p
through Florida.
The bride was gowned in a brown
wool ensemble trimmed with fur, and
her accessories and modish small bat
were of the same shade. Her flowers
w r ere sweetheart roses and valley
lilies.
The bride is the third daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Maddox, well
known citizens of Henry county, and
the namesake of her mother, the for
mer Miss Mary Emily Barnes, of
Jackson. After graduating from the
local high school she continued her
studies at Locust Grove Institute un
der Professor Claude Gray, where
she specialized in music, and at an
Atlanta business college. Mr. Turner,
the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Van
Turner, both members of leading
Henry county families, attended
Georgia Tech and the University ;f
Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. Turner will
make their home in Luella, where he
is associated in business with his un

“WOMANLESS WEDDING”
BE PRESENTED FRIDAY
Under the direction of the Finance
committee of the Jackson Woman’s
Club, Mrs. 0. A. Pound chairman, a
“Womanless Wedding” will be pre
sented at the Jackson school audito
rium Friday night, October 7. The
cast has been rehearsing for several
days and the production will furnish
amusement for all who attend.
The program abounds in amusing
situations and an evening of fun is
fissured. The admission has been set
at 10 and 15 cents. The sponsoring
committee will appreciate your sup
port.

Roberts as manager of the Jackson
Rogers store was awarded a trip to
the fair for the largest increase in
sales during the month of June.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Singley en
tertained members of the family and
a number of friends with a barbecue
dinner Sunday, it being the occasion
of Mrs. Singley’s birthday. All the
children and grandchildren were
present. At noon a sumptuous dir.-
ner was spread in the grove near
the house. About 50 people were
present to enjoy the hospitality of
Mr. and Mrs. Singley.

Martin, of Milledgeville, attended the
barbecue given by Mr. and Mrs. W.
H. Singley, Sunday. Miss Marie Sing
ley returned to Milledgeville with
them.

MISS CARMICHAEL IN THE
OFFICE OF COUNTY AGENT
Miss Mary Carmichael is attending
to clerical work in the office of
County Agent B. M. Drake this week
while Mr. Drake is at the Southeas
tern Fair with a team of 4-H club
boys. Mr. J. L. Bailey, member of the
county cotton committee, is also
;pending some time in the county’s
agent’s office.
Mr. Drake went to Atlanta Sunday
morning with three 4-H club boys,
Lamar Bond, Harry Ridgeway and
Wilma Letson, who will give a dem
onstration in soil improvement with
the use of crimson clover.
CALVIN FEW MAKES GET
AWAY FROM BUTTS GANG
Calvin Few, sent up at the August
term of superior court and given
a sentence of one year on the charge
of chicken stealing, escaped from
the Butts county chaingang Monday
afternoon. Officers so far have been
unable to apprehend the fugitive.

CENSUS OF TRANSIENT
RELIEF CASES TAKEN
Miss Pauline Mallet, director of
the Butts County Relief Committee,
states a census of transient relief
cases was made October 3. The gov
ernment is seeking to relieve the
distress of transients, tourists and
others passing through the commu
nity, and has ordered a census in or
der to deal with this phase of relief
work.
