FIFTEEN HOUR WEEK EFFEC

JECTS. FUNDS ASKED TO CON
TINUE THIS WEEK
Beginning this week all men en
gaged in CWA work in Butts county
are placed on a fifteen-hour week.
The rate of pay remains the same
as heretofore.
This is in line with an order re
cently issued by Harry L. Hopkins,
national CWA director.
At present the CWA force is en
gaged in street work in Jackson and
improving school grounds and build
ings in the county.
Other projects are pending, subject
to approval by the state authorities.
Emd of CWA In Sight
Washington, D. C., Jan. 22. -
President Roosevelt is ready to ask
congress for an emergency appro
priation of $1,116,000,000 to carry
or. the Civil Works Administration,
the Civilian Conservation Corps and
direct federal relief.
He is standing pat, however, on
his plan to taper off the civil works
program and wind it up in May.
It is the president’s hope that with
the coming of summer 4,000,000 men
now on the government’s emergen
cy payroll will be able to find nor
mal outdoor work.
Nevertheless, there is a growing
movement in congress against this
sudden conclusion of the civil works
program and a strong effort is in
prospect to continue it, at least in
part, throughout the'summer.
The final decision probably de
pends upon business conditions pre
vailing later in the summer.

All streets in the town are being
placed in excellent condition, the
sidewalks graded and soiled and a

ceiving attention. When all of the
improvements have been made Jen

Mayor Mills is supported in this
work by the 'board of aldermen con
sisting of J. O. Minter, W. T. Thurs

and S. L. Johnson.
Jenkinsburg is to be congratulated
on this progressive improvement
campaign.
