Friends here of Dr. Robert C.
Edwards, of New Orleans, formerly
of Jackson and son of Mrs. J. B,
Edwards and the late Mr. J. B. Ed
wards, are glad to know he is im
proving from wounds received last
Wednesday when a pistol was acci
dentally discharged, sending a bullet
through his lung. Mr.- Edwards, who
received treatment at the Oglethorpe
Infirmary in Macon for several days,
is now with friends at Byron. The
accident happened at Unadilla.
The accident, a most peculiar one,
happened when Dr. Edwards grabbed
for his dog as it jumped from his au
tomobile, a pistol fell from his pock
et and the discharge wounded him
in the right lung.
Dr. Edwards and his wife, the
former Miss Anna Dawn Watson, his
mother and sister, Mrs. L. G. Marlin,
were en route to New Orleans. Dr.
and Mrs. Edwards had recently visited
ted Mrs. Edwards and she was re
turning with them. Mrs. J. B. Ed
wards and Mrs. Marlin continued to

Did you know that there arc two
thousand (2,000) students of the Uni
versity System of Georgia who are
carrying on their studies in a great
variety of courses without ever
leaving their home communities ?
Of this number approximately one
thousand (1,000) are studying by
the correspondence method while
approximately one thousand (1,000)
have grouped themselves into ex
tension classes which are met reg
ularly by instructors chosen from
the faculty rosters of the several
Institutions of the University Sys
tem.
In short, there is literal truth in
the slogan of the University Sys
tem’s Division of General Exten
sion—“ The State Is Our Campus."
In larger and larger numbers, as
the people learn of the unusual op
portunities presented by the Exten
sion Division, they are taking ad
vantage of its broad facilities and
enrolling for one or more courses.
Organization
Established by the Board of Re
gents as a distinct unit of the Uni
versity System of Georgia, the
Division of General Extension,
through the Department of Adult
Education, offers two types of In
struction: (1) extension classes,
gathering in their home towns each
week for lectures and discussions
by the University System faculty
member detailed to meet with them;
and (2) correspondence courses
parallel and equivalent to courses
given resident students, likewise
prepared qnd conducted by regular
University System faculty members.
Purpose
The purpose of the Division of
General Extension is to enable stu

tend college to meet both degree re
quirements and professional stand
ards, and also to encourage among
the people at large home-study as a
means to broader general culture,
sound vocational advancement, and
the more profitable utilization of
leisure.
Wide Range of Subjects
The Department of Adult Educa
tion cooperates with all institutions
of the University System of Geor
gia, and the instruction offered em
braces several hundred courses in a
great number of subjects iti Agri
culture, Art, Commerce, Economics,
Education, English, French, Geog
raphy, Health, History, Home Eco
nomics. Journalism, Latin, r.i3the
New Orleans and Dr. and Mrs. Ed
wards will complete their trip a?-
soon as his condition will permit.
Dr. Edwards is a brother of Mr.
Joseph E. Edwards of Jackson. He
has many friends in his boyhood
home who hope he will soon be re
stored to normal health.

Washington, D. C. Jan. 30. —Sec
retary Wallace tonight extended thj
closing date for the sign-up cam
paign for 1934-35 cotton production
contracts to February 15.
In postponing the closing date
from January 31, Wallace said, the
matlcs, Music, Philosophy, Physical
Education, Political Science, Psy
chology, Science, Sociology and
Spanish.
Who May Register f
Courses by correspondence or in
extension classes are open to any
person qualified to pursue them
with profit.
While the courses are designed
for all and are open to all. they are
of particular interest to high school
graduates or others who cannot fur
ther pursue th#ir education as resi
dent college students: to teachers
desirous of further academic or pro
fessional training; to professional
or business men and women who
wish to supplement their training
and to keep abreast of advancing
knowledge: to home-makers who
feel the need of intellectual stimu
lus: to parents who wish to study
in order to be of greater help to
their children in their school work;
to those who-must earn while they
learn; to Woman’s Clubs, Parent-
Teacher Associations, Civic Clubs—
as well as other groups of persons
who wish to study along other lines,
and to earnest, forward-looking men
and women In every walk and rela
tion of life who may wish to widen
their knowledge for either cultural
or practical results.
Credit tor Work Done
Students who satisfactorily com
plete work In extension classes or
by correspondence receive the same
credit as do resident students at the
respective institutions of the Uni
versity System. One-fourth of the
credit required for a degree may be
obtained through the Department of
Adult Education.
Teachers' Credits
Under the regulations f the State
Department of Education, full cred
it for either extension class or cor
respondence instruction is allowed
for professionalization and renewal
of certificates.
Vocational and Non-Crcdit Courses
Special vocational and non-credit
will be provided for resi
dents of any community whenever
sufficient interest is manifested.
These courses will be designed to
help people in various trades and
industries to better handle their

present jobs and to prepare them for
more Important jobs.
When to Enroll
Afternoon and evening extension
classes may be organized anywhere
In the state at any time during the
school year.
Correspondence instruction is
continuous, and a student may reg
ister at any time.

being used to charge automobile bat
teries. Before trying to disconnect
the batteries Mr. Newton turned off
the switch light, but the main switch
was not pulled and when he stepped
off the running board of the car to
ihe ground the circuit was completed.
He was unable to pull loose from the
electricity and Mrs. Newton who
went to his rescue was unable to ex
tricate him from the danger.
Mr. Newton, before losing con
sciousness, told the cook to pull the
switch and this probably saved hi-:
life.
