MR. CHAMPION JONES
SUMMONED BY DEATH
The death of Mr. William Champ
ion Jones, 83, well known resident of
Monroe county of the Berner com
munity, occurred Teusday. Death
followed a long illness. Mr. Jones
had suffered two or three strokes of
paralysis and reoently his condition
had been critical.
He was one of the best known citi
zens of this section of the state. Born
in South Carolina, Mr. Jones moved
from New'ton county to Berner forty
years ago. He was a successful
farmer and was held in high esteem
by a host of friends who are pained
to know of his death. He was a
member of the New Fellowship
church.
Mr. Jones, who transacted muc*h of
his business in Butts conty, was well
known to the citizens here. He is
survived by his wife, the former Miss
Elvina Padgett ,of McDonough; 3
daughters, Mrs. K. 11. Lassiter and
Mrs. R. I. Lassiter, of Berner, ano
Mrs. J. E. Goddard, of Griffin; 2
sons, P. W. Jones, of Berner, and J.
R. Jones, of Rayne, La.
Funeral services were held at
Kandy Creek church Wednesday af
ternoon at 3:30, with Rev. Mr. Mosc
ly ,of Barnesville and Rev. IT. A.
King, of Flovilla, officiating. In
terment was in the family lot in the !
church cemetery.
MR. W. LEE LEVERETT
SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS
Mr. W. Lee Leverett, well known
citizen of the Old Bethel community,
died Wednesday morning at 1:30.
He had been in declining health all
the year and suffered from a com
plication of diseases. Many friends
of the family regret to know of the
passing of this estimable citizen.
Mr. Leverett was born in Jasper
county and moved to Butts several

wife the former Mrs. Jack Taylor
of Butts county; three brothers, J.
H. Leverett, of Monti<jello, and J. A.
Leverett, of Jackson; four sisters,
Mrs. C. L.Lumsden and Miss Callic,
Leverette, of Monticello; Mrs. Rena
Barnes of Covington and Mrs. P. H.
Wuille, of Charlotte, N. C.

Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at
Stark Methodist church.

manager for the seven counties, in
cluding Butts, Henry, Spalding, La j
mar, Upson, Pike, Fayette.
The setup will be a permanent one,
it is announced. There will be 22

DEDICATION OF CANNON
TO BE HELD HERE FRIDAY
In connection with the Memorial
Day Program Friday, dedication of
the cannon recently obtained from
the War Department, will take place.
Captain E. S. Settle will make the
address and Miss Roslyn Redman will
unveil the cannon.
Tlie exercises will 'be on the court
square at 10:30 and will precede th■?
march to the cemetery. Members of
the Jackson Rifles and American Le
gion will take part in the exercises.
