PEPPER FACTORY GETS
READY FOR YEAR’S RUN
INTERIOR OF BUILDLING PAINT
ED AND MACHINERY PLACED
IN GOOD SHAPE FOR BEGIN
NING OF CANNING SEASON.
The Jackson plant of the Pomona
Products Cos. is being made ready for
the beginning ol the canning season,
which will probably start in August.
Under the direction of J. W. Lewis,
licld repi escnlative, the interior of
the building has been painted and the
machinery overhauled and placed in
first class condition. The additions
and improvements add much to the
appearance of the building and will
mean greater comfort and conven
ience to the operatives.
Pepepr in the Jackson area is
looking well and the crop promises
to be one of the best grown here
in several seasons. Frequent rains
enabled growers to get the pepper out
early and stands are uniformly
good . Pepper is well advanced for
the season.
Farmers of Butts county are grow
ing 600 acres on contract for the
Pomona Products Company.
In the event there is too much
pepper in the Griffin zone for the
plants there to handle, some of the
pepper will be switched to the Jack
son plant, it is stated. This seems
to insure a steady run when the
season begins.
It is likely there will be ripe pepper
in August and the plant will begin
operation the last of August or the
fi.st oi September.
FIRST ENLISTMENTS IN
CCC CAMPS END SOON
FIRST CONTINGMENT WILL BE
MUSTERED OUT AND RE
PLACEMENTS BE ENROLLED.
JACKSON CAMP AFFECTED.
The first year’s enlistment in the
nation’s Civilian Conservation Corps
will end on June 30, and thousands
of young men will be mustered out
ol service.
At the Jackson camp some 8b
young men will be replaced by new
enlistments.
The recruits will be sent to camp
between the 15 and 23 of July, ac
cording to present arrangement. The
boys will be sent direct to the camps
for training and conditioning. In
the first enlistment they were given
training for two weeks at army posts.
The quota for the state has been
announced, but not for individual
camps. Just how the new men are
to be recruited is not made plain.
It is expected, however, that the men
for the Jackson camp will be selected
at Fort McPherson.
Just what quota Butts county will
have, if any, has not been announced.
In some instances jobs are open
ing up for the men mustered out of
service. This is by on means gen
eral, according to the best informa
tion obtainable.
Butts county citizens i'eei a friend

HOME AGENT MAY
BE PET ON HERE
BOARD OF EDUCATION AT ITS
MEETING TUESDAY WILL CON
SIDER MATTER. WOMEN FA
VOR EMPLOYING AGENT.
The question of employing a Home
Demonstration Agent for Butts coun
ty will be considered Tuesday when
the Board of Education meets in
monthly session. The matter has
been set for special hearing at that
time.
The matter is one that has been
agitated for some time. Several
delegations of ladies, acting for
themselves and for various organiza-
tions, have appeared before the
board to urge favorable action.
Butts county through its board of
commissioners has agreed to bear
its share of the expense, and the
state and government in co-opera
tion will pay part of the salary.
Several members of the board, a
majority, it is believed, favor a home
demonstration agent for the county.
While no definite announcement will
be made in advance of the meeting,
it is reported on reliable authority
that the boai'd looks with favor on the
question. The ladies interested in
seeing an agent placed on duty in
the coutny will not lessen their ef
forts, however, until the matter has
had final and definite action.
With a full time home demonstra
tion agent working in co-operation
with the county agent much good
cculd be accomplished for the county
along many constructive lines.

USE GOOD SUGAR
FOR GOOD JAMS
AND JELLIES
Buying in Cotton Bags Assures
Purity and Full Weight
In buying their sugar for canning
and preserving this Summer, South
ern women should be particular to
buy it in the 25. 10 or 5-pound cot
ton bags in which it is packed at the
refinery.
There are many good reasons for
this, the first being that she knows
exactly what brand of sugar she is
getting, and can tell whether or not
it is sugar that has been refined in
this country under the strict United
States sanitary conditions, by Amer
ican labor, under the NR A code—-or
whether it is foreign refined sugar.
The cotton bag also keeps the sugar
in the same pure, clean state in
which it left the refinery.
In addition, when she buys sugar
in a cotton bag. she is stimulating
the consumption of cotton —the crop
upon which the prosperity of the
agricultdral South largely depends.
The Savannah Sugar Refinery at
Savannah, Ga.. (refiners of Dixie
Crystals Sugard alone uses 10.000.000
yards of cotton cloth a year in pack
ing their sugars.
Put up plenty of fruits this sum
mer for use this winter. The price of
canned goods, jellies, etc., has gone
up materially in recent months, and
it is predicted that their price will
go even higher. The more you can
this summer, the more you will save
on your food bill next winter.
