ORGANIZE CLUB.
The girls of the Tussahaw com
munity met Thursday afternoon, July
26, at Tussahaw school. Miss Evelyn
Kent, our home demonstration agent,
gave a demonstration in canning. The
club will be organized at a later date.
INFORMAL BRIDGE
FOR VISITORS
Mrs. James C. Newton entertained
two tables of bridge at a delightful
informal party on Saturday after
noon for Mrs. W. T. Street of
Dothan, Ala., Mrs. Morrison Settle,
of Center Hill, Fla., and Mrs. Hada
way Rowlenson, of Columbus, Ga.,
who were guests of relatives here.
The games were played in the
living room where summer flowers
were attractively arranged and where
the loevly salad plate with iced tea
was seiwed.
DEMONSTRATION HELD AT '
TUSSAHAW SCHOOL.
On Monday afternoon, July 23, at
2 O’clock the women of the Tussa
haw community enjoyed seeing Miss
Mae Wood of the Kerr Jar Cos. give
an ihstruetvie and educational dem
onstration of the canning of tomato
juice and soup mixture. Miss Evelyn
Kent, county demonstration agent,
presided over the meeting. She an
nonced that a woman’s cluO would be
organized in September. Let’s be
present and co-operate with her.
MRS. NEWTON ENTERTAINS
GAY NINETIES CLLUB.
Mrs. Park Newton was hostess to
the members of the Gay Nineties
Club in compliment to Mrs. W. T.
Street, of Dothan, and Mrs. Morrison
Settle of Center Hill, Fla., who were
members of the original bridge club
when they resided in Jackson a num
ber of years ago, the affair being a
delightful reunion.
Refreshing ices and cakes were
served as the guests arrived and after
interesting reminscences bridge was
enjoyed at tables arranged in the
large living room where lovely gar
deen flowers were used with charm
ing effect.
BIRTHDAY DINNER IN HONOR
OF MR. SMITH.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Smith of
Worthville entertained their children,
and grandchildren and a few very
close friends Sunday with a birth
day dinner in celebration of Mr.
Smith’s sixty-eighth birthday.
About 50 guests were present. The
visiting guests were Mr. and Mrs. Al
bert Townsend and children, Mr. S.

CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY.
, One of the most enjoyable parties
of the season was a “kid party,” giv
en by Miss Willie Ruth Singley,
Thursday afternoon, July 26 in honor
of her birthday.
All the guests were dressed in kid
costumes, wnilh was very amusing.
Games and contests were enjoy
ed by the guests. Prizes were
awarded Mrs. Carl. Holifield, Mrs.
Jim Abbot and Miss Sara Martha
Redman in the contests. Mrs. Jim
Abbott was voted the most kiddish

MISSIONARY SOCIETY MEETS
WITH MRS. BILES.
Groups one and two of the Meth
odist Missionary Society met with
Mrs. S. A. Biles at her lovely coun
try home on last Monday afternoon.
On the broad verandas made cool and
comfortable by beautiful shade trees
the gracious hostess and her daugh
ter, Miss Lois, seated the ladies.
The Bible Study for the afternoon
was given oy Mrs. Lyons, the Christ
ians Peace being the theme.
Mrs. Marvin McCord read a series
of articles on the Church’s respon
sibility to the Rural South. The con
trubution of the Rural South as n
stabilizing influence and other re
lated subjects.
An article on the subject of World
Peace, bringing out the fact that
makers of munitions were respon
sible to a large degree ofr stirring up
discord between nations and advocat
ing that a board of control be estab
lished to regulate this industry, was
Mrs. Harris.
After a short business session de

The regular business meeting of
the Methodist Woman’s Missionary
Society of the Methodist church will
be held at the church next Monday
afternoon at four o’clock.

George Head entertained the mem
bers of the Jackson Garden Club
and several visitors at her home on

The meeting was called to order
by the president, Mrs. Head. The
visitors, Miss Lois Biles, Mrs. ’ Mor
rison Settle of Center Hill, Fla., Mrs.
W. H. Rowlenson of Columbus and
Mrs. Evans, were given a cordial
welcome. A brief business session
was held and the meeting turned
over to the program chairman for
July , Mrs. J. C. Newton.
A most interesting and enjoyable
program had been arranged by Mrs.
Newton. “What to do in July” was
told by Mrs. Head. Accompanied
by Mrs. J. B. Harrison, Mrs. D. P.
Settle and Mrs. Newton sang a duet,
“Will You Remember” from May
time. The speaker of the afternoon
Mr. E. A. Johnson of Springfield,
Mass., one of the landscape architects
stationed at the CCC camp, was in
troduced by Mrs. Newton. The sub
ject was “Landscape Architecture.”
Mr. Johnson illustrated his talk by
drawing and diagraming on a black
board. A piano solo by Miss Biles,
“Fire-flies” by Phillippe concluded
the program.
