SCREEN MENU FOR NEXT
WEEK AT THE PRINCESS
The romance and tragedy in the
life of America's great composing
genius, Stephen Foster, provides the
background for “Harmony Lane,”
pretentions Mascot production which
comes to the Princess Monday and
Tuesday, Dec. 30-31.
In the picture Douglass Montgom
ery, who plays the part of Foster,
shows with rare feeling the early
strivings ofo the young genius whose
songs were regarded at that time
as being of no especial significance,
tut merely popular music, although
teday many of his compositions have
become immortal, including such fine
numbers as “My Old Kentucky
Home,” “Oh! Susanna,” “Old Folks
At Home” (Swanee River), “Come
Where My Love Lies Dreaming,”
“Massa’s In The Cold Ground,”
“Camptown Races,” “Beautiful
Dreamer,” “Lou’siana Belle,” and
ethers.
According to the picture, Foster
fell in love with a neighbor’s daugh
ter, Susan Pentland, and was engaged
and about to be married when he was
sent away to his brother’s office.
When separated, misunderstanding
aiose beween the two lovers which
resulted in Susan Pentland marrying
one Andrew Robinson. Fostbr mar
ried Jane McDowell, and yet the
young couple continued to love each
other, and in the screen story Susan
Fentland remains the inspiration for
his songs until the day of his death.
“Harmony Lane” has in the cast
such outstanding screen stars as
Evelyn Venable, Adrienne Ames,
Joseph Oawthorn, William Frawley,
Lloyd Hughes, Gilbert Emery, Clar
ence Muse and the Shaw Choir,
James Bush, David Torrence, Cora
Sue Collins, Ferdinand Munier, A1
Herman, Earl Hodgms, the “Nee
Paw” of radio fame, Wynne Davis,
the Allied Arts prize-winning song
stress, and a cast of thousands.
Fox Movietone News is an addeo
attraction for these dates.
“The Irish In Us”
For Wednesday and Thursday,
Jan. 1-2, tw r o all time favorites, Pat
O’Brien and James Cagney, will
make their appearance in “The Irish
in Us.” They are the famous “Here
Comes The Navy” team and charm
ing Olivia de Havilland is the femi
nine star. It is the fastest and fun
niest “shindig” ever staged by these
two fighting devils of “Here Comes
the Navy.” Others in the cast are
Frank McHugh and Allen Jenkins.
The comedy for Wednesday and
Thursday is “Country Needs.”
“Thunder Mountain”
Friday and Saturday, Jan. 3-4,
brings George O’Brien in Zane Grey’s
great dramatization of “Thunder
Mountain.” Thrills, adventure and
romance abound in this great episode
of the West. In the supporting cast
are Barbara Fritchie, Frances Grant
and Morgan Wallace.
Also chapter 10 of “Roaring
West” which is, “The Fatal Blast.”
There will be a good comedy on for
these dates also.
