By MADAME ROAMER
In roaming around town I saw:
That Jackson socialites might take
lessons in tinting finger nails from
Lynwood Thurston, four-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Thurston.
He gets his mother’s polish and fixes
his nails a vivid red. When asked
the whys and wherefores he said, “I
done it myself.” And. truthfully,
they didn’t look much different
from all the other fancy nails one
sees “on every hand.”
The two attractive new horns on
McDonough road —those of Arthur
Stodghill and W. D. Pope—add
much to that section of the city.
That Mary Lois (Woodward)
White keeps more good things to
eat in her refrigerator than any
body we know, and callers are fre
quently served some of the tempting
eats.” Mary Lois very graciously
gives the credit to the two mothers
—Mrs. W. A. White and Mrs. D. O.
Woodward—whom, she says, “are
always sending us something nice.”
That may be partly true for Mary
Lois and Jim Barth both look like
these doting mothers are doing a
good job.
That Homer Carmichael now has
a good case of middle-age spread.
Homer hails from Atlanta now but
was in town a few days ago. Jack
son still has a claim on him.
NOT MANY REGISTER HERE
FOR THE STATE PRIMARY
When the time expired May 4 for
voters to qualify for the state pri
mary on September 11, only a few
voters registered in Butts county.
This is explained because of the
heavy registration for the county
primary on April 5.
The registration list will now be
purged for the state primary.

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS. JACKSON, GEORGIA
Miscellany
This item they call the abundant
life. The phrase first came from
the lips of the Saviour. He refer
red, as we suppose, to a spiritual
state.
Then the phrase was taken up by
our President, to which he seems to
have given the meaning of better
living conditions, useful gadgets,
modern time and work savers, so
that there would be more leisure for
“living.” ' And the inference is that
by the word “living” he means pleas
ure, travel, social contacts and
plenty of them.
Thus we have the Saviour’s mean
ing, tho somewhat indefinite to our
minds, and the New Deal meaning.
Our own idea of “the abundant
life” is a life filled with heart in
terest. Things we love to do, folks
we love to be with, causes we love
to serve. If we have few of these,
we have no life of abundance even
tho we comb our hair with elec
tricity and mow the lawn by remote
control.
Thoughts on going down Third
Street, toward the sunrise, in the
merry month of May:
Newton Hardware sidewalke is a
good exhibition of how to prune
overgrown bushes. Triangle Park:
A bit of freshness after the filling
stations. Folks don’t realize that
a certain garden club has to pay
some five or more dollars every time
that Park is really cleaned and
properly barbered.
The J. H. Carmichaels have alter
nated crepe myrtles with weeping
elms. Would like the whole street
done up in that. The Hugh Mallet’s
house is whitening under the paint
brush. Big house, big family; a fine
proportion.
Methodists have cut their back
hedge, much needed improvement.
Here’s a pretty home, only too much
shrubbery, too thick and bunchy.
And here’s one that needs its face
washed. No, not painted. Just
washed with Dutch cleanser and the
sweat of a negro’s arm. And only
the will under the porch roof. The
rest looks very respectable. Cost—
about four dollars.
Oh well, so much for a Sunday
afternoon’s pointing with pride and
viewing with alarm. Who are we
anyhow, that our opinion is worth
having?
Only, we’d like to moralize that
pruning a yard is like repentant
confession: it has to be done before
one can grow straight and beautiful.
