City Softball
League Gets
Under Way
CARR ELECTRIC CO., ETHER
IDGE-SMITH CO. TAKE EARLY
LEAD. DOUBLE-HEADERS ON
WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY
Jackson’s softball season got un
der way Friday night when a team
of “leans” walloped the “fats” 19
to 4 and Pepperton trounced Jack
son just as soundly, 25 to 11. A
large and enthusiastic crowd at
tended the first night softball game
ever to be played here and assured
financial success for the nocturnal
venture.
Opening games of the Jackson
City League were played Wednes
day afternoon and Carr Electric Cos.
and Etheridge-Smith Cos. won vic
tories over Moore’s Gdrage and
Spencer-Buthanan, respectively. In
the very close and exciting opener,
Etheridge-Smith beat Spencer-Buc
hanan 6 to 3, while Carr Electric
outscored Moore’s Garage, 16 to 12.
The games were played on Wednes
day afternoon in order not to con
flict with the Baptist Revival.
Present plans call for two double
headers next week, both at night,
on Wednesday and Friday at 8 p.
m. Games played at night may be
cut to 5 innings apiece in order not
to make the program too long. It
is pointed out that two five inning
games can be played within an hour
and a half to two hours.
Uniforms are being ordered for
the players and may possibly arrive
in time for next week’s games. The
association will erect a general ad
mission booth where tickets may be
purchased for 10c and will be taken
up later during the game. Children
under 12 will be admitted free to
all games. This small admission
charge is necessitated by the nomi
nal expenses accruing to the Asso
ciation, such as equipment, lighting,
and building expenses.

Bell System To
Spend 400 Million
On Construction
AMERICAN TELEPHONE AND
TELEGRAPH COMPANY PRE
PARES TO MEET NATIONAL
DEFENSE REQUIREMENTS
The Bell System expects to spend
approximately $400,000,000 on new
construction during 1941 as a re
sult of accelerated industrial and
military activity under the national
dense program, President Walter S.
Gifford of the American Telephone
and Telegraph Company, said at the
annual stockholders meeting. This
represents an increase of more than
$100,000,000 over 1940’s total ex
penditure for the same purpose.
Mr. Gifford revealed that long
distance traffic is running about 25
per cent above that of last year, and
that on an average more long dis
tance calls are being handled now
than during the previous peak ex
perienced in September, 1939, when
the war broke out in Europe.
Emphasizing the part the Bell
companies are playing in providing
for defense communication needs,
Mr. Gifford said, “In the midst of
this extraordinary activity, the Fed
eral Communications Commission
announced that it had instituted a
formal rate case against the Bell
System Companies.
“We are naturally disappointed
that the commission should see fit,
especially at this critical time, to
depart from the practice which it
has followed in the past of handling
rate matters by informal confer
ence with the company—a procedure
which, the commission has said in
its annual reports and other pub
lic statements, has been productive
of results without the necessity of
legal proceedings.”
He declared that the speed and
vastness of the defense program and
the importance of the telephone to
its success are a challenge to every
man and woman in the Bell System
and expressed pride in the spirit
and competence with which the en
tire telephone personnel is meeting
the challenge.
WHAT WE CAN AFFORD
(By Benjamin Franklin)
There are many good thing*
which we can all afford, regardless
of our circumstances:
We can all afford to give freely
the best that we have because in
giving it we have it doubly.
We can well afford to doubt a
seeming injustice, because God’s
law is sure.
We can well afford to be tolerant
of the opinions of others, because,
if we are growing, our own views
are certain to change.
We can well afford to believe that
which is good, because only the
good is true.
We can well afford a seeming
sacrifice for the right, because any
other side is a losing side.
We can well afford any effort
which adds to the richness of our
inner life; because any good from
without can reach us only through
an affinity with the good we have
cultivated within.
We can well afford to be cheerful
in apparent defeat, for we have not
lost irreparably while we still have
the spirit to cheer.
Principles alone are enduring.
Personality, appearance, manner
isms, all these change continually.
Serving God is doing good to man.
FARM INCOME RISING
Farm income is rising. Prices of
all products combined are near the
high marks since the outbreak of
the European War; total farm in
come for the first quarter of 1941
was a little larger than in the like
period of 1940. Total for the sec
ond quarter also is expected to be
larger, according to the Bureau of
Agricultural Economics in its month
ly summary of the agricultural sit
uation.

Early Communication
On February 14, 1859, Oregon
was admitted to the Union by act
of Congress. News of this action
was eagerly looked for in Oregon,
and particularly in Salem, which
was to be the capital of the new
state. It did not reach there, how
ever, until 29 days after the pas
sage of the act. The news was
transmitted to St. Louis by tele
graph and was carried from there
by Overland mail to San Francis
co, arriving on March 10. It was
conveyed by steamer to Oregon
City, reaching there on March 15.
CHIROPRACTIC FREES THE NERVES
You will agree that in cases of nervous disorders it is but logical
that all efforts should be directed to secure a proper coordination
of the nervous system. The Chiropractor knows that disease is due
to pressure upon nerves by misplaced spinal bones, and he removes
this pressure in a pninless manner by adjusting the spinal bones
to their normal position.
In the case of nervous disorders spinal adjustments go directly to
the CAUSE of the trouble, and it is a rare case of this type indeed
which cannot be benefitted by Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments.
