Florida for several weeks.
Mrs. E. R. Edwards of Flovilla
was called to Jefferson City, Tenn.,
Wednesday because of the serious
illnesss of her mother, Mrs. Virginia
Patten.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson Fisher of
Griffin complimented their mother,
Mrs. S. W. Maddox, with a surprise
birthday dinner April 30. Other
guests were Mrs. S. F. Duffey, Mrs.
J. A. Dodson and Seaborn Maddox
Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Scott had as
their guests Sunday Mrs. Nolle
Brown and daughter. Ann, Mr. and
Mrs. Arrington. Mrs. A. N. Knowles,
Ralph and Lea man Wilson, all of
Atlanta, and Mr. George Rissle of
Philadelphia.

City was the recent guest of his
mother, Mrs. Annie E. Curry. He
was en route to Jacksonville for fu
ture residence.
Mr. and Mrs. William M. Towles
of Memphis, Tenn., are spending
several days with relatives here.
Mr. Towles is with the Civil Aero
nautics Administration.
Miss Viola Slaughter is being de
lightfully entertained during her
stay in Wildwood, Fla., with Dr. and
Mrs. T. K. Slaughter. Together
with Mrs. Slaughter they spent a
week in Miami, and entertaining for
them at several delightful teas and
luncheons were Mr. and Mrs. T. R.
Harmon, residents of Miami, and
Mrs. J. D. Renfroe and Mrs. Ruth
Browder of Macon, and Mrs. A. F.
White and Miss Virginia White of
Flovilla, who are spending some
time in Miami.

Friends of Willie Avery Cook are
glad to know he is improving after
an appendix operation at the Geor
gia Baptist Hospital Sunday, and
will return home in a few days.
After spending a few days with
relatives here Mr. and Mrs. E. W.
Greer, Misses Joyce Greer and Vi
vian Van Norman left Tuesday for
their home in Lake Charles, La.
Mr. and Mrs. Levi Hurt Jr. of
Macon and Mrs. Margaret Carmich

day with Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Hurt

Carmiehael home for a week’s visit.

Friends of Mr. Reed Maddox of
Forsyth will be interested to know
that he will be dismissed from a
Macon hospital' this week. Mr.
Maddox was severely burned at a
power station at Gordon, Ga., in
March of last year, and has been
confined in a hospital ever since.
He is coming to the home of his
mother, Mrs. J. L. Maddox in For
syth, and his many friends trust his
improvement may be rapid.

the Dixie Saturday afternoon and
night will provide plenty of thrills
for the movie fans. The offerings
will be “In Old Cheyenne” with
Roy Rogers and George Hayes, to
gether with “The Lone Wolf Keeps
a Date” starring Warren William
and Franfces Robinson.
Monday and Tuesday brings up
“Adam Had 4 Sons” with Ingried
Bergman, Warner Baxter and Susan
Hayward taking the leading roles.
This picture has had wonderful runs
in all the big cities, thus proving its
popularity. Attention is called to
the change in time for the night
shows from 7:15 to 7:30. Also, the

“So You Wont Talk” one of Joe
E. Brown’s always pleasing comedies
is on for Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday, Georgia’s
own Judy Canova is the star in “Sis
Hopkins.” Along with Judy, and
equally acclaimed are Bing Crosby
and Jerry Colonna. The hilarious
Judy and her cast keep up the
laughs until the curtain falls. It
truly belongs to the “must” class.
TWO STILLS DESTROYED
IN WORTHVILLE DISTRICT
Sheriff J. D. Pope reports the de
struction of two still outfits in
Worthville district May 3. One
outfit, a fairly large one, was lo
cated near Worthville and the other
near the od Holifield mill site. About
700 gallons of beer were poured
out. Neither plant was in opera
tion and no arrests were made,
Sheriff Pope said.

WHITE POPULATION
IN GEORGIA IS UP
ELEVEN PER CENT
Georgia’s white population has
increased 11 per cent during the
last decade, while its nonwhite pop
ulation has gained 1.3 per cent, ac
cording to official 1940 census fig
ures released Thursday.
The state’s white residents now
compromise 65.3 per cent of the
total population, while nonwhites
comprise 34.7 per cent. In 1930,
the statistics showed 63.2 per cent
white and 36.8 per cent nonwhite.
The 1940 census counted 2,038,-
642 whites in Georgia as compared
with 1,085,081 nonwhites.

TO BE INDUCTED
IN ARMED SERVICE
Local draft boards have received
orders from state headquarters that
after May 15, next, no registrant
will be inducted who does not have
the capacity of reading and writing
the English language as commonly
prescribed for the fourth grade in
grammar school.
Registrants already classified who
do not have the capacity of reading
and writing the English language
as commonly prescribed for the
fourth grade in grammar school
should be reclassified and placed in
class V-F.
