Tuesday night.. In addition to the
picinic lunch was the beautiful sur
prise birthday cake for Mrs. McKin
ley. Present on the occasion were

and Sally Ann, Mr. and Mrs. Noah
Powell, Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Mullis

DUKE FAMILY REUNION
HELD ON JULY 4
All the children of the late E. G.
Duke und Mrs. Ira Duke met with a
sister, Mrs. Mercer Hodges, near
Jackson Lake July 4 for a family
reunion. Mrs. Maude Higdon and
Mrs. John Robert McMichael of At
lanta, Mrs. Byron Gresham of Wins
ton-Salem, N. C., Ray Duke of Dan
ville, Va. and Mrs. Grace Lamb of
Macon and their families, enjoyed
the fine meal served and a day of
fellowship spent together. Several
friends were invited for the occasion.

BRIDE WITH TWO PARTIES
ON SATURDAY, JULY 5
Mrs. Harry W. Ball and Mrs.
William Otis Ball complimented
Mrs. Levi Ball, a recent bride, with
two lovely parties on Saturday. In
the morning there was a Coca Cola
party at the home of Mrs. Harry
Ball on Covington street. There
were forty guests present on this
delightful occasion.
Coca Cola, assorted sandwiches,
stuffed dates and individual cakes
were served. Assisting the hostesses
were Mrs. H. O. Ball, Mrs. Ollie
Willingham, Mrs. Victor Carmichael
and Mrs. L. M. Spencer. Blue hy
drangeas and pink gladioli were
used as the decorations.
Out-of-town guests were Mrs.
H. W. Copeland, Mrs. Henry Walk
er, Mrs. J. B. Carmichael of Griffin,
and Mrs. .John T. Stephens of For
syth.
In the afternoon, twenty-four
guests gathered at the home of Mrs.
W. O. Ball on West Third street
where bridge was enjoyed for sev
eral hours. First prize, a crystal
bon-bon dish, went to Mrs. M. L.
Powell; the consolation, a pair of
guest towels, to Mrs. John Hunt.
The guest prize, a pair of em
broidered pillow cases, was pre
sented to Mrs. Ball.
Assisting in entertaining and in
serving the delicious salad course
and punch were Mrs. W. H. Maddox,
Mrs. H. O. Ball, Mrs. Ollie Willing
ham and Mrs. L. M. Spencer.
Yellow and orange day Hlies were
used in the dining room, and blue
hydrangeas and pink gladioli in the
living room and hall.
Out-of -town guests included Mrs.
Edna Copeland White, Mrs. D. W.
Holberg, Mrs. Warren Haisten of
Griffin; Mrs. Bert Kinard of Macon;
Mrs. J. E. Warren of Atlanta.
MRS. FLETCHER ENTERTAINS
AT BRIDGE FOR MRS. BALL
Mrs. H. M. Fletcher was hostess
at a delightful bridge party Tuesday
afternoon for Mrs. Levi Ball, who
before her marriage in June wa
Miss Eleanor Walker of Griffin.
There were six tables of players
and in the games Mrs. J. W. O’Neal
made high, Mrs. Roy Prosser low
and the bridge prize was given Mrs.
M. L. Powell. The circulating prize
went to Mrs. Maurice Carmichael.
Mrs. Ball, the guest of honor, was
given a set of salad plates.
Following the games, a delicious
salad course and tea was served.
The out of town guests included
Mrs. Champ Vance, Mrs. A. K. Bol
ton of Griffin and Mrs. Haddaway
Rowlenson of Columbus.

CHEROKEE GARDEN CLUB MET
WITH MRS. STILWELL BALL JR.
The Cherokee Garden Club met
with Mrs. Stilwell Ball Jr. with Miss
Elizabeth Hood as co-hostess. Twen
ty members and two visitors were
present.
Mrs. Bill Sasser, Mrs. Maurice
Carmichael, Mrs. Harry Ball and
Mrs. Edgar Raven were welcomed as
new members. It was voted sometime
ago for the club to keep a scrap
book. Mrs. Roy Prosser has purchas
ed this book and asks that each mem
ber of the club help by contributing
material for the book.
The entertainment committee re
ported that plans had been made
for a picnic at Turner’s Camp on
Jackson Lake on Friday, July 11.
The program was in charge of
Miss Hood who presented Mr. Dan
Harold, freezer locker specialist,
from Athens who discussed the home
freezer. Mr. Harold used charts and
slides in pointing out the advantages
and disadvantages of a home freez
er.
The hostesses served delicious ice
cream and cake.
TOWALIGA GARDEN CLUB
The Towaliga Garden Club held
its July meeting at the home of Mrs.
George Etheredge with Mrs. A. L.
Weaver as cohostess. Eighteen mem
bers were present. Mrs. Belle Wea
ver and Mrs. Newt Etheredge were
visitors present.
Due to the absence of the presi
dent, the vice president, Mrs. Ralph
Evans, presided over the business
meeting. Mrs. Lanier Ridgeway and
Mrs. S. T. Ridgeway gave an inter
esting account of their visit to the
Dunaway Gardens near Thomaston.
The visit was made the first of
June when all Garden Club members
of Butts county were invited to
spend the day there inspecting the
gardens.
Mrs. Fletcher Compton and Miss
Eva Compton presented an interest
ing and instructive program on
“Chrysanthemums and Their Care.”
After this a garden guessing game
was enjoyed with Mrs. A. L. Wea
ver being winner. She was presented
as a prize a pot containing an as
sortment of rooted pot plants.
Garden club members brought
vegetable ai'rangements in place of
flower arrangements. Mrs. Harry
Ridgeway won first place and Mrs.
S. P. Didgeway won second. In flow
er specimens Mrs. Robert Lane won
first and Mrs. 'Paul Letson second
with Mrs. Paul Evans taking third.
The hostesses served delicious ice
cream with ice box cookies.
CARMICHAEL FAMILY HELD
REUNION ON JULY 4
The children and grandchildren
of Mrs. J. R. Carmichael had a fam
ily reunion at the summer home of
Mr. and Mrs. Homer Carmichael at
Towaliga July 4. During the day a
picnic dinner was served and the
day proved an enjoyable one for the
guests. Edward Carmichael, a shut
in for several years, was the guest
of honor.

James W. Watkins Jr. student at
the Augusta Medical College, is
spending a vacation with his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Watkins.
Captain and Mrs. John B. Mays
Jr. and little daughter of Chanute
Field, 111., have returned home after
visiting relatives here and in Monti
cello. Capt. Mays is now attached to
the Air Corps in the Regular Army.
Mrs. Polly Evans is instructor of
music at Camp Nakanawa, Mary
land, Tenn. for July and August.
W. T. Evans is spending July in
Warrenton with his uncle, Dr. Char
lie Evans.
Mrs. Ophelia Niemeyer, St. Pet
ersburg, Fla., is visiting Mrs. Curtis
Kelly for a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ball are
spending the week in Savannah and
at Savanah Beach.

Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Maddox of
Athens were weekend guests of Mr.
and Mrs. W. H. Maddox.
Mrs. Howard Bailey returned a
few days ago from Palo Alto, Calif.,
where she visited Captain and Mrs.
H. M. Fletcher.
Miss Idell Barnes of Covington
spent the past week with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Barnes.
T. A. Nutt Jr., of Athens, spent
the fourth of July holidays with
Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Nutt here and
with friends in Atlanta.
John Emory Harper, Bradenton,
Fla., flew up to spend Thursday
night with Mr. and Mrs. Avon Gas
ton. Mr. and Mrs. Gaston returned
with Mr. .Harper in his plane for
several days in Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Williams and
daughter, Mary Jane, 'spent Friday
with Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Wright in
Milner.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Williams, Miss

ited Warm Springs and Magic Hill
on Wednesday.

Jackson Saturday to attend the two
parties given by Mrs. W. O. Ball
and Mrs. Harry Ball in compliment
to Mrs. Levi Ball, an attractive June
bride.

son, Julian, spent last week in Flo
rida and while there visited Mr. and
Mrs. Sam Moore at Lakeland and
Mr. and Mrs. Stewart WtSlch at
Umatilla.

Jr. and Hal of Terrell, Texas, were
recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.
G. Barnes and Mr. and Mrs. B. M.
Barnes in Jackson and Mr. and Mrs.
J. O. Maddox in Luella. Later they
will visit Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Quick
in Sanford, N. C. and will stop in
Detroit en route home.

announce the birth of a son, David
Bailey .Woodward Jr., July 3, at
Piedmont Hospital.
Mr. and Mrg. Henry Turner and
small daughter, Nan, of Attalla,
Ala., spent the July 4 holidays with
Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Turner Sr.

ing at Strickland Memorial Hospital
