Photographer Burns Up
That traveling photographer was
annoyed (“burned up" he said) when
he had to get a license in our
town. Said he thought this was a
free country, where any one was
entitled to work for a living,
j From where 1 sit, it’s a free
country, all right—but freedom
entails responsibility. And that
license signifies a person’s right
not only to ply his trade, but his
right to protection against unde
sirable competition, unfair prac
tices, or shady methods.
That’s why tavern keepers are
licensed, like photographers, or any
one w ho runs a service to the pub
lic. That license is their protection.
And it also means that they’re part
of a group who subscribe to law
and order under the Brewers’ pro
gram of Self-Regulation.
The Brewers keep tabs on places
selling beer. When one gets out cf
line, they warn it and often report
it to authorities who can revoka
its license if it doesn’t play square.
That’s your protection!

Winter Grazing
“Good As Gold”
Agronomist Says
The green gold of winter grazing,
when transformed into dairy and
beef products, will add folding mon
ey to the farmer’s income, E. D. Al
exander, agronomist of the Georgia
Extension Service, declared this week
in pointing out that there’s plenty of
green gold waiting for Georgia farm
ers.
Farmers have found in recent
years, Alexander said, that it is pos
sible to have good grazing during the
winter months and that production,
especially of milk, has increased tre
mendously when cows were furnished
such grazing.
North Georgia farmers should pre
pare their land at once, the agrono
mist said, but those in south Georgia
can wait until the last of August.
County agricultural agents can sup
ply full information on producing
winter grazing crops.
KIWANIS CLUB WILL
SUSPEND MEETING TO
HONOR CAMP MEETING
Following an anuual custom of
paying tribute to the Indian Springs
camp meeting, the Kiwanis club will
cancel its meeting scheduled for
August 12. This is done in coopera
tion with a Kiwanis objective, sup
port of the churches in their spiritual
aims, and in order that members may
attend the evening services at the
camp ground.
Meetings will be resumed August
19 when the program will be in
charge of Edgar McMichael.
JJOBBY HAMMOND IS J
AT CAMP WAHSEGA
AS 4-H CLUB OFFICER
Bobby Hammond, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Hammond, Jackson, is
spending this week at Camp Wahse
ga near Dahlonega as an officer in
the Georgia 4-H Club Council.
Bobby, one of the outstanding 4-
H club boys in Butts county and a
crack athlete, is a graduate of Jack
son High School class of ’47. His
many friends are proud of the honors
that he has heaped upon himself and
his county by his excellent 4-H club
record.
A sweltering public will be ready
for cooler weather and the 1947
football season. Baseball is on its
last legs for this year.

L. J. Washington
Named to Direct
The Farm Bureau
At a meeting held at Indian
Springs July 31 officers to serve the
Butts county Farm Bureau for the
ensuing year were chosen.
J. L. Washington was named pres
ident, Lovett Fletcher, vice presi
dent, and Avon Gaston, secretary
and treasurer.
In appreciation for his long and
faithful service as head of the coun
ty organization, H. H. McCord was
elected president emeritus. Mr. Mc-
Cord has shown much interest in the
Farm Bureau and has attended sever
al of the state and national meetings.
The officers were instructed to se
lect the bord of directors.
Members of the Farm Bureau from
Butts, Newton, Monroe, Bibb, Spald
ing, Coffee, Dooly, Pulaski and other
counties gathered at Indian Springs
last week for a picnic and rally. H.
L. Wingate, president of the GFB
and Mrs. Joe Ray, head of the wom
an’s division, were the principal
speakers at this meeting. F. M. Mc-
Daniel of the National Cotton Coun
cil was also present and made a talk.
The speeches by these prominent
visitors proved instructive and help
ful to those present in the Butts
county and Fourth District Rally.
The attendance was not especially
large but those who attended were
rewarded by good talks, a fine dinner
and delightful fellowship.
HYBRID CORN
More hybrid corn is being grown in
the South this year than ever before
and prospects are bright for good
yields. Patient research for superior
parent strains and new hybrids adap
ted to the South is beginning to pay
off.
