BUTTS COUNTY
SOIL NEWS
By J. E. PAYNE, Soil
Conservation Service
A number of farmers in Butts
county cooperating with the Towali
ga Soil Conservation District have
kudzu that will do to graze or cut for
hay this summer and fall. In most
cases this kudzu was planted on areas
that were too badly eroded or too
steep for row crops. Before these
areas were furnishing the farmer lit-
tle or no returns and were washing
away. Now the kudzu furnishes gra
zing or a hay crop as well as controls
the erosion on these areas.
Mrs. Kinard, a district cooperator,
was cutting kudzu for hay last week.
Other farmers in the county who are
cooperating with the Towaliga Soil
Conservation District have or will
have kudzu that will furnish a good
hay crop or some grazing between
now and frost. There were several
cooperators in the county who receiv
ed good returns from their kudzu last
year and hope to this year.
Two cuttings of hay can be
made from kudzu per year if the cut
tings are made at the proper time. If

I two cuttings are desired the first
should bd made in late June or early
July then the second just before frost
if possible. Most farmers desire to
just cut their kudzu once
as they receive about as much hay
and it saves labor in cutting and han
dling. If one cutting is to be made it
should be be made in the fall to get
the most hay.

Lice on Cotton
What is commonly called honey
dew by farmers is beginning to show
up on cotton. This honey-dew is
caused by lice that feed from under
side of the cotton leaf, puncturing
the leaves and causing' the liquids to
run from the plant. Some lice are
; always present each fall but as a rule
the number is not sufficient most
years to cause heavy damage to the
cotton.
Excessive use of calcium arsenic
will cause an increase in the number
of lice, because arsenic will kill the
insect that eats the lice and will not
kill the lice. When honey-dew shows
on cotton early in the season and es
pecially when cotton is late fruiting,
because of the defoliation of the cot
ton. It is possible that there will be
heavy damage in the county this year
unless effective control measures are
practiced. The build-up is especially
heavy, it appears, in dry weather,
such as we are now having. Rain will
destroy many lice.
There are several remedies recom
mended for the control of lice: Dust
ing with approximately 10 pounds of
rotenone dust per acre is effective,
using 1% rotenone. A 5% DDT dust
is also effective. Another recom
mended control method is mixing of
Blackleaf 40 with calcium arsenic,
which serves a double purpose, the
poisoning of boll weevil and the lice.
A mixture of two pints of Blackleaf
40 to 50 pounds of calcium arsenic
will give a 2% dust which will control
lice where the build-up is not too
heavy. However, in tltose cases where
the number of lice is adready excess
ive, three pints of Blackleaf 40 is re
commended to 50 pounds of calcium
arsenic. This dust is best prepared in
the rotary mixing barrel such that
used for treating cotton seed. Care
should be exercised in mixing the
dust as inhaling fumes of Blackleaf
40 is poisonous. Bricks and pebbles
should be rotated in the barrel for
at least five minutes. The addition of
approximately 5 pounds of hydrated
lime to 100 pounds of calcium arsenic
will incresase effectiveness of the
Blackleaf 40.
Dr. O. E. Sells to Speak at
Towaliga School
Dr. M. P. Jarnigan, University of
Georgia, has said that one acre of
good winter grazing is worth $125.
One acre might not be worth that
much but farmers who have wintered
large numbers of cattle are finding
its value.
I believe Dr. O. E. Sells of the
Georgia has had
as much experience in building and
maintaining good grazing as any
man in Georgia. There are some new
recommendations coming out this
year on winter grazing that will be
CANNING PLANT TO
RUN TWICE WEEKLY
Effective Tuesday of next week,
the community canning plant will re
turn to its Tuesday and Thursday
schedule, according to J. M. L. Co
mer, county vocational teacher in
charge of the plant.
The plant was operated an extra
day this week to take care of the
expected heavy demand, but it is be
lieved now, with the peach crop al
most harvested, that the twice a week
schedule will be sufficient.
of tremendous value to farmers.
Dr. Sells will be at Towaliga school
on Wednesday night, August 13 and
will speak to the group on winter
grazing. You will get some good
practical information at this meeting.
You are invited to attend.
