F. C. Hearn Is
'Candidate For
Head of Schools
-
Frank C. Hearn, Butts County
School Superintendent, makes an
nouncement in this issue for re-elec
tion for anew term which begins
January 1, 1953. Elected to the post
in 1944, when Aldine Carmichael re
signed after nomination, Mr. Hearn
has been an active force in school
affairs in the county. The program
of consolidation into one central
school to serve the entire county was
carried out under his administration,
and the new high school was built
since he first assumed office. More
recently he has been carrying out
the provisions of the Minimum Foun
dation program as it relates to Butts
county.
Mr. Hearn is an active religious
and civic leader. He is widely known
over the state where he taught after
graduation from the University of
Georgia before assuming his present
duties. He has a host of personal and
political friends who will accord him
support in the present campaign.
Self-Employed
Make Returns
In Special Way
Self-employed people who are now
under Social Security must report
their 1951 earnings for social se
curity when they turn in their in
come tax returns for 1951. This re
'minder is from J. W. Overstreet Jr.,
manager of the Macon social security
office.-
“We have had literally hundreds of
calls in recent weeks about this, said
Overstreet. “So for the benefitt of
self-employed people in this area I
have asked the Progress-Argus to
list below a few essential fact about
social security and the self-employ
ed.”
- Here are the main points brought
*ut by Mr. Overstreet:
1. A tax on net incomes up
to $3,600 must be paid at the same
time the final 1951 income tax report
Is sent in—no later than March 15,
1952.
2. The report will be made on
Schedule C, which is available in the
office of the collector of internal
revenue.
3. If the net income is not at
least S4OO, make no report.
4. People who pay the taxes will
be building social security benefits
for themselves just as people who
work for others have for years.
5. You will need a personal soc
ial security number. If you don t have
one already, call your social security
office.
6. Your occupation may be auto
matically excluded.. Ask your social
security office at 710 Grant Build
ing, Macon, Ga., about the free book
let on the self-employed.
Corn Winners
Be Honored At
Athens Meeting
Several hundred Georgia farmers,
including B. H. Hodges, R. C. Luns
ford and Billy Presley, 1951 win
ners, will gather on the University
of Georgia campus in Athens Febru
ary 2 to receive silver keys and cer
tificates in recognition of their pro
duction of 100 or more bushels of
corn per acre in 1951.
Union county with 57 farmers
topped tne list of winners. The win
ners will be entertained at luncheon
Allowing the presentation of awards.
The projects begin on a local level
to emphasize better cultural prac
tices. The new members for 1951 will
Jbin more than a thousand who have
already achieved the coveted award
in the Georgia 100 Bushel Corn
Club.
The Corn club contest is conduc
ted by the Georgia Agriculturl Ex
tension Service.
Butts county winners in corn
yields in other years include Chester
O’Neal, W. C. Godsey and R. C.
