On The Farm
Production Front
By B. B. CAMPBELL
COUNTY AGENT
There has been manifested in the
county considerable interest in poul
try, commercial egg and broiler pro
duction, as well as interest in com
mercial hog production. It is impor
tant to know the extent of the in
terest in these various projects in or
der to work out a sound marketing,
housing and feeding program. "The
extent of the interest in these pro
jects will determine if they can be
carried out on a commercial basis.
There is therefore, being prepared
and mailed to each farmer a ques
tionnaire as to the interest in com
mercial egg production, broiler pro
duction, turkey production and hog
production. This information is nec
essary to develop such programs.
Please watch for your questionnaire
and be sure to to fill it out and re
turn it. A tour is being planned for
visits to some of these projects which
are being carried out on a commer
cial basis. Announcements will be
made with references to the tour at
a later date.
Mobile soil testing unit will be at
the vocational building, near football
field, at Jackson Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The unit will be there all day Tues
day. Farmers interested in getting
soil analyzed should take advantage
of this opportunity. It is important
that soil be dry as possible when
brought in for analysis. If the sample
is wet when taken it can be dried
on the stove. Analysis can be com
pleted and report made on that day.
In collecting soil for samples go the
approximate depth at which the plant
will feed, 2 to 3 inches for most, and
get samples in several different lo
cations in order to have a represen
tative sample. Mix all samples thor
oughly for the same field. After mix
ing take out about Vb pint for analy
sis.
In planning for 1952 farming,
careful consideration should be given
to cost of production. Indications
are that farm prices should be sub
stantially the same for ’52 as in ’sl.
However, production costs will more
than likely continue to rise. It would,
thereifore, be advisable to produce
as economically as possible. This
does not mean that we should reduce
the amount of fertilizer and mater
ials used per acre but should more

Farm Bureau News
W. C. GODSEY, President
Georgia’s 50,485 Farm Bureau
! members are now working together
!in their respective communities to
I solve local problems, which in the
end will make their community a
: better place in which to live. Such
action, I am sure, will prove the real
value of farm people working to
gether through their farm organiza
tion.
Farm Bureau members in Butts
county are familiar with the pro
grams that are being carried on by
Farm Bureau. There are many other
problems, however, which are in ex
istence in Bptts county, which Farm
Bureau, through cooperative action
among its members, could improve
"upon. I would like for our Farm Bu
reau members to be giving some
thought along these lines, and cer
tainly present their ideas to their or
ganization.
In today’s column I would like to
point out some of the activities that
are being carried on by some other
FB chapters. These will serve as an
carefully select the land, and use
production materials where it will
pay the best, thereby reducing the
unit cost of production. It seems at
this time it will also be advisable to
produce all livestock feed possible
since feeds are likely to be scarcer
in '52 than in ’sl and at a higher
price. One of the most economical
ways to produce livestock feed is
pastures. The second most economi
cal way is hay crops and third is
grains. Farmers should plan to pro
duce adequate feed to take care of
the livestock on the farm.
The closing date "for filing applica
tion for seed certification on Springs
crops such as Ladino clover, Fescue,
Crimson Clover, oats, and w'heat is
April Ist. If you plan to certify seed
for 1952 please get your application
filed not later than this date. Forms
are available at the county agent’s
office.
Present plans are to have in Feb
ruary a farm crop short course in
the county and will include discus
sions on corn and cotton production,
pastures, and pimiento pepper pro
duction. The short course will be
conducted by agronomists from the
College of Agriculture. Farm people
are urged to watch for the date and
make plans to attend this short
course.

indication to the possibilities of FB,
not only in Butts county, but over
the state as well.
Harris County Farm Bureau mem
bers have seized the initiative in com
bating a problem which had fast be
come a menace to their county. The
problem was that of rabies. The
Harris county FB members, realizing
the urgency of the situation ,and
realizing their position in the emer
gency thus created, called a county
wide meeting of FB members and
other people in the county. An out
standing authority was called upon to
addressed the assembled FB people
on the best ways of combating the
rabies menace.
At the same time Farm Bureau
members in Harris county stepped
forward to cooperate with the Coun
ty Board of Commissioners, and the
County Health Department in insti
gating a program for eradication.
The Butts County Farm Bureau is
sponsoring a campaign for the erad
ication of rabies in this area and
urges all citizens to help us.
We have also pledged our efforts
in cooperating with the dairymen,
hoping our combined activities will
help to solve some of their problems.
