Jackson High’s basketball teams
enjoyed a better-than-average sea
son in 1951-52, Coach Joe Bell’s girls
•team winning 11, losing 6 and tying
one of 18 games and Coach Hunter
Strickland’s boys squad winning 10
and losing 8 of their games.
Scanning the season’s record will
show their opponents were either a
“cousin” or a nemesis. Out of the 36
games played, only on three occa
sions did a rematch change the result
of the first meeting.
Coach Bell’s girls, for instance,
found soft marks in Eatonton, Grif
fin, Spalding, Monticello and Mc-
Donough, each of which they bopped
twice during the season. In an early
season encounter, they also added
Forsyth’s scalp in a 32-31 thriller.
But Milner, Covington and Rober
ta each |?ad the Jackson girls’ num
ber as they administered twin lick
ings to the Red Devil coeds during
the season.
In a rematch, the local girls played
a spine-tingling 30-30 tie with For
syth, and in this instance the result
was changed only one point from the
former meeting.
Coach Strickland’s boys ran into
the same thing, as the current bas
ketball season seemed to go strictly
according to the books.
The Red Devils cut down Forsyth,
tlriffin, Covington and McDonough
twice each and boasted single victo
ries over Monticello and Milner.
On the other hand, Eatonton, Ro
berta and Spalding each waylaid the
Devils in both their encounters and
Monticello and Milner turned the
tables and upset the dope sheet once
i
apiece.
Roth Jackson squads were well
drilled and aggressive in their play
and local fans expect them to be
contenders in the district tourna
ment.
