Forestry News
By FRANK CRAVEN
Butts County Forester
Once again wildfire struck Butts
county. Over 100 acres were burned
last week in fires ranging from 2
acres up to 50. Brush burning was
again the casual agent. We wish to
compliment Mr. Robert Smith of Flo
villa on the way he handled his brush
burning. He notified this office of
the time he was going to burn and
had a 6 foot firebreak around the
area he was going to burn. By doing
this, he insured the safety of the
surrounding countryside from the
damages of wildfire. Now that the
woods are drying up, brush burning
is becoming increasingly dangerous.
If anyone is going to burn, burn
wisely; pick a day when the wind is
not blowing or if a small breeze is
blowing, burn into the wind, have a
wide fire break around the area, have
plenty of help and equipment near
by and last but not least, notify this
office of the day and time you are
going to burn. Our phone number is
7029.
Last week on a fire, two members
of this unit were praised fof their
quick thinking and work for keeping
a fire down to 11 acres when it was
well on its way to becoming a very
large fire. The two men, Charles
Elliott and James Cook, were compli
mented by Mr. Don Sonnen, who is
with the Interstate Land and Devel
opment Company.
Getting away from fires for the
time being, there were approximately
5,000 seedlings, loblolly, planted in
Butts county last week. Among those
planting were Mrs. Redman, Mr. Ted
Evans, Mr. Lou Moelchert, Mr. Pow
ell and Mr. Stevens. Due to the bad
year for seedlings last year, this is
probably the only bunch of seedlings
we will get until next fall. Later in
the spring, this office will take or
ders for seedlings.
A telephone was installed in the
County Forester’s home last week.
This will be the night phone in case
of fires. The number is 5957. Mr.
Craven wishes to thank Mrs John
Tingle for # very generously letting
him use her phone as a night phone
until his was installed.
