Forestry News
By FRANK CRAVEN
Butts County Forester
Butts county is entering anew era
of forest management.
In the earlier days, the Butts
County Forestry Unit pointed out
this week, even the term “forest
management,” was virtually un
known throughout all other areas of
our nation.
Farmers in those olden days looked
| on forest merely as an added burden
to clearing and preparing their land
for agricultural products. Fire then,
instead of being looked upon as an
enemy of the forest, was often used
to clear the land of trees, with no
consideration of the ravages which
erosion can bring.
Forest products then, with few ex
ceptions, were of little cash value
to the farmer, for trees then, as our
forefathers expresses it, were “com-
mon as clay”.
As more and more timber acres
were burned or cut , however, trees
became more and more a desired
product. Prices for forest products
kept rising, and farmers came to
realize that their trees were as vital
a crop to them as was cotton and
corn. Other farmers, looking at
their rutted and gullied hillside from
which trees had been removed years
earlier, came to see the vital need
for reforestation to prevent erosion.
With this growing awareness of
the importance of Tree Crops, the
lesson soon followed that ‘ the better
the crop, the better the price” In
terest in farm forestry soon followed,
until today many of the 73,395 acres
which make up this county’s forest
land are excellent examples of what
the value of selective cutting, ade
quate reforestation, protection from
disease and fire can mean to forest
land.
Farmers in this area who wish help
on farm forest programs can obtain
this aid from a Georgia Forestry
Commission management forester by
contacting the Butts County Forestry
Unit.
