Walks and Drives: In this driving
age the automobile has become an im
portant part of our way of life. When
planning the approach to the house
be sure to provide ample turning and
parking space. The parking should
be convenient to the entrance. A lot
of the unused walks across the middle
of the lawn to the road can be elimi
nated by efficient parking spaces.
The walks can run from where the
visitor parks to the door. If a walk
is never used it is wasted. Put the
walk where the most traffic is.
The question of curved or straight
walks and drives always comes up
when planning the front yard.
Usually a straight walk or drive is
best for short distances, while-the
curved line looks well when the dis
tance is great. Usually curves and
bends are bad. If there is no reason
for a bend, such as a tree or large
shrub, the curve seems to fit better.
Also to contours of your yard will in
fluence the shape of your drive. If
your house is on a hill the curved
drive running along the contour as
much as possible is desired.
If your yard is small the circular
drive will cut it up into two sections
and give a spotty lawn effect.
Backing out into the street or road
should be avoided if space will allow
turning around before entering dan
gerous traffic.

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS. JACKSON. GEORGIA
Do not plant large growing plant
groups at your driveway entrances. If
you want entrance plantings use low
shrubs or trees that have branches so
you see oncoming traffic.
.
Attractive walks can be made of
brick, flagstone or gravel.
Try to get some pattern in the
walk. Broad expansions of concrete
can be monotonous.
Azalea* and Camellia* should be
fed with a special fertilizer after
their normal blooming period.
Pruning: Spring bloom plants such
as spirea, forsythia, etc., should
be pruned after they bloom. Do not
“brush cut” the top. Go down close
to the ground and cut out some of
the old wood.
The new vigorous wood will have
more and better blooms next year.
