In Dixie Hits
Thursday and Friday brings Ty- 1
rone Power and Piper Laurie to the
Dixie in ‘“The Mississippi Gambler.”
Laid in the days when respected
men about town were adept at fenc
ing and cards and not averse to a
duel, it is the story of a high-minded
young gambler who plies his pro
fession successfully up and down the
Misissippi in a luxurious river boat.
Smoothly acted and produced, it is
an excellent melodrama of its type.
The Dixie continues its policy of
bringing outstanding attractions to
its screen on Saturday when Rock
Hudson and Barbara Hale co-star in
Saturday’s action hit, “Seminole.
Filmed in the Florida Everglades, it
is the moving story of the Seminole
Indians and their inevitable submis
sion to the will of the white man.
Monday and Tuesday Erroll Flynn
and Maureen O’Hara star in“ Against
All Flags,” a b.lood-and-thunder pi
rate tale, filmed in magnificent tech
nicolor. The action takes place in the
year 1700 and concerns the efforts
of a British naval officer to destroy
the pirate stronghold on the Island of
Madagascar.’ Violence is incessant
and glorified.
Another animal character has been
created to tickle the funnybones of
Dixie patrons on Wednesday. He is
“Fearless Fagan,” the lion. Janet
Leigh and Keenan Wynn co-star
with the King of Beasts in a laugh
riot that will make you forget Fran
cis, the mule, or Bonzo, the monkey.
Stewart Granger, James Mason
and Deborah Kerr, three of Holly
wood’s best, have top roles in Thurs
day and Friday’s hit, “The Prisoner
of Zenda.” It is a colorful and spec
tacular presentation of the popular
old romance about a commoner who
masqueraded a3 a king. The techni
color is lovely in many scenes of
courtly pageantry.
