Talk To Kiwanis
Explained SS Law
Different phases of the public as
sistance and social security program
were explained to the Kiwanis club
Tuesday night by Mrs. Martha Gar
rett of the Macon field office of the
Social Security Administration. The
program was presented by Noah
Powell as chairman.
Mrs. Garrett, in charge of 25 coun
ties in the middle Georgia area, in
cluding Butts which she visits the
third Monday in each month, told of
the old age and survivors insurance
program. First enacted in 1935, the
SS law was amended in 1950 and in
1951 self-employed persons were
covered for the first time. Upon at
taining the age of 65 those covered
by the law may obtain compensation,
depending upon the amount paid in,
Mrs. Garrett said. She also explained
that self-employed persons must be
covered for six quarters before they
are entitled to benefits.
The averse old age benefit is $47
per month, Mrs. Garrett declared.
She answered questions and gave
members of the club a better under
standing of a law much in the public
ihind at present.
The US Savings Bond Division
awarded a certificate to Jackson
National Bank for outstanding work
in selling bonds since the program
began in 1940.
The club voted to attend as a
group revival services at the Metho
dist Church Tuesday night, to be
joined also by Key Club members.
Lee Redman and Dan Fretwell were
present from the Key Club and W. L.
Holloway was a guest of Noah
Powell.
The club voted to sponsor a cal
endar project to raise funds for Rock
Eagle 4-H camp.

Mrs. Arthur Smith
Claimed By Death

Mrs. G. Arthur Smith, 57, died at
her home in Fincherville at noon
Tuesday as the result of a sudden
illness. Though she had been in de
clining health for several years, the
fatal attack came without warning.
Mrs. Smith, member of a leading
Butts county family, was the former
Miss Annie Townsend and spent her
entire life.in Butts and Henry coun
ties. She was a member of the Bap
tist Church.
Survivors are her husband, widely
known farmer of the Fincherville
area; two sons, Leon and James
Smith; her mother, Mrs. J. B. Town
send Sr.; four brothers, J. L. Town
send, J. A. Townsend and G. W.
Townsend of Jackson; J. B. Town
send Jr. of Warner Robins; two sis
ters, Mrs. Pearl Farmer qnd Mrs.
E. A. Schroder of Atlanta; four
grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held at Sar
dis Baptist Church Wednesday at 3
p. m. with Rev. M. O. Harerll of
Macon and Rev. Robert Chambers of
Atlanta officiating. Nephews acted as
pallbearers. Burial was in the church
yard under the direction of D. T.
Carmichael & Sons, McDonough.
JOHN T. RAWLS DIES AT
his home in McDonough
John T. Rawls, widely known res
ident of McDonough, died at his home
Monday morning. He was a brother
of Lonnie B. Rawls, Miss Dora
Rawls, Mrs. H. B. Rosser, Mrs. R. D.
Hoard and Mrs. Dewey Wise, all of
Jackson .He is also survived by his
wife, a daughter, Miss Frances
Rawls and a son, Carl Rawls, of Mc-
Donough.
Funeral services were held Tues
day at 3 p. m. in the McDonough
Baptist Church, with Rev. Glenn
Waldrop officiating. Nephews were
pallbearers and interment was in the
McDonough cemetery.
