BIG HIKE IN TEACHER
PAY IN PAST 15 YEARS
Atlanta, Ga.—Findings of a survey
by the National Education Associa
tion show that rural school teachers,
including those in Georgia, earn
three times as much money now as
they did 15 years ago. The national
canvass disclosed rural teachers earn
an average of $2,484, while Geor
gia’s annual average salary was
$2,550 compared with the 1937 fig
ures when white teachers received
received SI,OOQ, and Negro teachers
$667. The survey revealed, however,
that inflation and rising living costs
over the past 15 years have wiped out
much of the “real wage” gain.
