tlfalfa and Sericea Among Best
ay Crops For State, Station Says
The following bulletin by the
(Georgia Experiment Station on hay
production will be of interest to
farmers and livestock producers;
The experience of dairymen and
cattle growers during recent years
have shown that there are times
when pasturage becomes insufficient
due to severe freezes and prolonged
droughts. During such periods the
demand for hay exceeds the supply
and prices are high.
Livestock specialists recommend
one to two tons of hay for each
animal on the farm. This is good
insurance and is an indication of
good management.
Experiments with many types of
forage crops have been conducted at
the Georgia Experiment Station dur
ing recent years. These tests have
shown that there are several species
and varieties of legumes and grasses
which are well adapted to Georgia
conditions. They have shown also that
some widely publicized crops are not
suited to local conditions. For exam
ple, Buffel grass is well adapted to
Florida and the Gulf Coast region in
general. At Experiment, this grass
was killed by frost during each of the
last three winters. It is a perennial
in sub-tropical regions but is an an
nual in most of Georgia. Alyce clo
ver, a summer legume which is well
adapted to the Mississippi Delta and
limited areas of Alabama and Flor
ida, does not do well at Experiment.
Likewise, the Trefoils have not suc
ceeded here. They start very slowly
and are killed back by stem rots dur
ing the esummer.
Among the crops which are well
adapted to nearly all sections of
Georgia, sericea lespedeza is increas
ing in importance more rapidly than
any other perennial legume. It makes
excellent hay if cut when 12 to 15
inches tall. The hay is leafy, green
in color, and cures easily. Yields vary
with the amount of rainfall and the
fertility of the land. In a five-year
test completed at this Station, the
average yield was 2.86 tons per acre.
Where crimson clover was planted
with sericea the yield of forage was
5.25 tons per acre annually.
Alfalfa is one of the best of all
hay crops. With proper fertilization
and good management, stands may
be maintained five to eight years, or
longer. In a test at Perry, Ga., the
avearge yield per acre in 1951 and
1952 was three tons per acre. At
Experiment, the yield for the same
period was four tons. Higher yields
may be expected when the rainfall
is greater and well distributed over
the summer and fall.
Alfalfa may be cut four to six
times each year. The first crop has
already been harvested this year at
Perry and Experiment. In the variety
tests, Kansas Common and Oklahoma
Common have made the highest
yields. ,
There are several varieties of soy
beans recommended for hay produc
tion. Some of these are: Yellow Ga
tan, Gatan and Otootan. Acadian

Soybeans may be planted on the
stubble after small grains have been
harvested.
Browntop millet is a good grass
hay crop which may follow small
grains, crimson clover, or winter
grazing. It grows off rapidly and
cures easily. If the rainfall is ade
quate, it may be cut twice.
The Sudans are" quick-growing
grasses which may be planted after
winter crops have been harvested.
Sweet Sudan and Tift Sudan do
equally well. The latter is more resis
tant to diseases and may be prefer
red for this reason. Press Bulletin
564 gives more information regard
ing Hay Crops for Georgia and may
be had upon request.
