On The Farm
Production Front
By B. B. CAMPBELL, County Agent
A meeting was held at REA build
ing relative to cotton insect control
for 1957. The program was present
ed by Dr. Beckham of Georgia Ex
periment Station, and Dr. C. R. Jor
dan, Extension entomologist, Athens.
Recommendations for 1957 will be
for farmers getting satisfactory con
trol, use same insecticides as for 19-
56. For those did not get satisfactory
control, four different insecticides
not now being used will be available
to choose from. These new insectici
des have different properties and
killing power from those being used
at present. Just prior to this prog
ram the Jackson Exchange Club held
their award program at Jackson
Hotel. Nine farmers and 4-H club
members completed the contest, how
ever only one 4-H club member had
cotton yield high enough to qualify
for a prize. Billy Presley received
SIO.OO for producing 1656 lbs. of
seed cotton per acre. This was high
est yield in the contest.
I had an opportunity to attend one
of the first meetings held in the
Adult Education Center in Athens.
This is one of the finest and best
equipped buildings in the state for
various farm groups to meet. Dr. C

estate.
This the 7th day of January, 1957.

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
C. Murry, Director of Agricultural
Units in Georgia, made the keynote
speech in which he called for $400,-
000,000 increase in farm income. He
outlined a 5 point program to accom
plish this goal: (1) Use every acre
of idle land for production purposes;
(2) Double yield of forage and grain
crops; (3) 50% increase in income
from cash crops; (4) Double carry
ing capacity of pastures; (5) Double
the income from forest areas. Meet
ing these objectives will depend on:
(1) Better farm credit system, more
capital made available to farmers;
(2) Through education and research;
(3) Better and more efficient sys
tem of marketing. F. H. Morgan also
attended the meeting.
On Wednesday, Jan. 16, C. E.
Washington and I attended a meet
ing at Barnesville on operation and
care of farm machinery which is be
coming more important each year as
farms become mechanized and as the
investment of farmers in machinery
becomes greater. It has been esti
mated that present day completely
mechanized farm has from SIO.OO to
$15,000 invested in farm machinery.
Certainly an investment of this size
needs protection in every possible
way. Plans are being made for coun
ty farm machinery clinics.
The Butts County Farm Bureau
has taken a foward step in helping
farmers to better market their tim
ber by purchasing 100 Scribner Tim
ber Scale sticks for distribution to
timber growers in the county. Proper
use of Scale stick will enable the
farmer to better know the value of
timber he has for sale.
A meeting was attended by Agent
on filing income tax. Good records
and knowledge of income tax laws
are essential to the intelligent filing
of income tax returns. Since Social
Security law have been made appli
cable to farmers, the filing of income
tax returns becomes much more im
portant. I have for farmers instruc
tion leaflets on filing income tax
available on request.
