IN MEMORIAM
In memory of our Darling Baby,
little Wayne Kersey, who passed
away five years ago January 30th.
Though five years have passed
It seems but yesterday
Since God sent an angel
And carried our baby away.
His memory we will ever cherish
As the years come and go
For we think of him often
And we did love him so.
We think of him in the evening
We dream of him at night
And his face is the first we see
At the break of heaven’s light.
When God pulled the curtains
down
On his life here below
It was “Good Bye’’ when he went
But up there it will be “Hello.”
There we will be at home forever
On that bright celestial shore
There to live with Him in Glory
Never to part no more.
—Mother, Daddy, Mary Joe and
Gerald Kersey.

On The Farm
Production Front
By B. B. CAMPBELL
County Agent
As we approach the planting sea
son for 1957 the farm outlook is
for a continued strong demand for
farm products with possibility of
price improvement for some farm
products, in ‘57. However for the
items the farmer will have to buy
the prices will continue high with
some items possibly showing an in
crease. Thus the price cost squeeze
will continue in ‘57 but should show
some improvement over that of ‘56.
The effect of the Soil Bank pro
gram, drought in the southwest and
exports of farm commodities will be
facts that the farmer will need to
watch in 1957 and will be important
facts in determining price reaction
during the year. So far 1957 we are
still faced with the price cost squeeze
but not as drastic as in ‘56 but still
an important factor when the farmer
goes to plan his year’s operation.
There are only two factors involved
in determining gross farm income.
These are the amount he has to
sell and the price he gets fdr it. With
reference to the amount the farmer
has to sell will depend on his ability
to put together five production fac
tors. These are (1) adequate fertili
zer; (2) good quality seed of adap
ted variety; (3) good soil well pre
pared; (4) control of insects and
diseases; and (5) favorable weather
conditions. It takes all these factors
to get maximum production. The
neglect of any one of them will be
reflected in the yield and the total
production that the farmer will have
for sale. The farmer has control over
all these items except the weather.
The basis for any fertilizer program
on the farriTis agricultural limestone.
Tests have ; shown that most of the
crops that we grow in middle Geor
gia is bepefitted by the application
of lime, Hme/alsa leaves the soil in
better physical condition and enables
crops to more efficiently use com
mercial fertilizer that is- applied to
the soil. As to the amount.and grade
.of commercial fertilizer the farmer
should use, will depend upon the soil
and the plant to be grown. Higher
the fertility in the soil the smaller
will be the need for application of
commercial fertilizer and vice versa.
This is just a matter of arithmetic.

If you had S2OO in the bank and
needed to draw a check for SSOO,
you would need to deposit S3OO more
or if you needed to draw a check for
SSOO and had only SIOO in the bank
you would have to deposit S4OO.
The total requirement for the plant
less the amount already in the soil
would equal the amount that
would need to be added to get max
imum production. The ony way to
know the amount of plant food al
ready in the soil and the amount
that needs to be added is through
soil analysis. Soil analysis is the first
and basic step in the efficient use of
fertilizer. In buying fertilizer the
total units of plant food should de
termine its value. For instance, a 4-
8-6 has 18 units of plant food, a 5-
10-5 has 20 units of plant food, a
4-12-12 has 28 units of plant food,
obviously with the price about the
same the farmer would get more for
his money by buying the fertilizer
having the highest plant food units.
Through research and developing
new varieties of field crops, there is
available to farmers information
that will enable him to buy quality
seed of the variety best suited for
his farm. Don’t ever buy any farm
seed until you have read the seed
tag and determine that the seed are
of the variety desired with a current
seed test showing high germination
and purity. The matter of controlling
insects and diseases becomes more
complicated each year; however,
there is usually on the market an in
secticide, herbicide or fungicide that
will control insects, diseases and in
some cases weeds in field crop pro
viding the farmer will familiarize
himself with these various products,
what they are intended to control
and use them properly—good results
may be expected. When all these
production factors are put together
in the right order and in the right
proportions the farmer should get
maximum production from his land.
