BUTTS COUNTY
SOIL NEWS
By J. E. PAYNF., Soil
Conservation Service
Over the past several years farm
ers in Butts county have shown a
great interest in the planting of
coastal bermuda grass for grazing
and hay. Well established coastal
bermuda is superior to common ber
muda in that it makes more growth
on well fertilized soils, grows later
in the fall, more drought resistant,
-and is more efficient in its use of
water and fertilizer. Coastal bermuda
grasses will grow where common ber
muda grows and has many advant
ages over some of the other grasses.
We have had some successful
planting in the county and some that
■were not very successful. Farmers
have used several different methods
of planting in establishing their
coastal bermuda. Regardless of the
method of planting the stolons should
be planted on a well prepared seed
bed. The most successful stands have

Farmers desiring to plant coastal
bermuda this year should begin get
ting their land prepared and making
plans for getting stolons. There are
a number of sources of available sto
lons. One thing to be kept in mind is
that the better the stolons are when
planted the better the survival you
will get under normal conditions.
