Unemployed In
Butts Are Paid
$30,793 in 1956
Commissioner of Labor Ben T.
Hniet reports that this area helped
the State of Georgia to establish
several new records in the field of
employment and job insurance dur
ing 1956. The information is revealed
in the Commissioner’s 20th Annual
Report to Governor Marvin Griffin
and the General Assembly.
The Department of Labor’s em
ployment service office serving this
county is located at 111 West Tay
lor Street, Griffin, Georgia. It also
serves Clayton, Fayette, Henry, La
mar, Newton, Pike, Rockdale, Spald
ing and TTpson counties.
This office, managed by Mac Mc-
Intyre, assisted employers in filling
2,591 non farm jobs in 1956. During
this same time employers hired
through the local office workers to
fill 2,456 farnj jobs. The state total
of non-faim job placements fdr 1956
is over 119,000. Statewide farm
placement.; hit an ail-time peak of
198,700.
During the year job insurance
payments totaling $19,171,751 were
made to unemployed Georgians. This
is $7,000,000 less than was paid out
in 1954, which was the peak year.
Over 14% of all payments made in
the State were to workers for whom
employers filed claims because full
time work was not available and for
which the workers received wages
less than their weekly job insurance
amounts. Payments ranged from one
dollar to S3O per week. Some 30,-
000 workers were laid off by em
ployers in large groups because of
plant shut-downs for various reasons:
over-inventory, fires, completion of
contracts, and such.
During 1956 $30,793 were paid to
employed workers in Butts county.
At present there are 101 unemployed
workers drawing job insurance on
claims filed in Butts county.

Cancer Education
Program Now On
In Butts County
A cancer education program has
beeen begun in Butts county, accord
ing to an announcement this week
by Mrs. E. M. McCord, Butts county
chairman for the American Cancer
Society.
Mrs. McCord listed the three pro
grams in the fight against cancer as
(1) research, (2) education, and (3)
service. Research is devoted to find
ing the cause of cancer and to de
veloping better techniques of diag
nosis and treatment based on what
is now known as cancer.
The education program embraces
professional education for doctors,
denists, and nurses and public edu
cation designed to reach every citizen
in our country, emphasizing the im
portance of early cancer detection.
Under service Mrs. McCord cited the
help given indigents including pain
relieving drugs, transportation,
dressings, bandages, and other sick
room conveniences when available.
The chairman called attention to the
$126 Butts county has received in
aid during the past four months for
two indigent cancer patients.
The month of February has been
chosen in Butts county for the ed
ucational crusade against cancer,
Mrs. McCord stated, and will contin

the crusade for funds in April.
Mrs. Ben Haisten, chairman of
clubs and organizations, announces
that any group desiring to show one
of these cancer education films
please contact her so that a time and
place may be arranged. Mrs. Cynthia
Davis, neighborhood community
chairman, is assisting Mrs. Haisten
and Mrs. McCord in arranging this
series of films.
The theme for the 1957 crusade
against cancer is “Fight Cancer With
a Check-up and a Check.”

NEWSPAPERMAN— —AN
ILLUSIVE CHARACTER
If he writes a good story about
you that’3 what he is paid to do. If
he doesn’t, you don’t read his stuff
anyway. If he writes his stories com
plete, they-aue-itoo-rlong. If he con
denses them, they are too short. If
he takes sides on a subject, he is try
ing to run things. If he remains sil
ent, he’s a coward. If he asks for ad
vice, he’s incompetent; doesn’t stop
to talk, the job has gone to his head.
If he does, that’s all he has to do
anyway. If his suit is pressed he
thinks he’s a big shot. If it’s not he
looks like all newspapermen. If he
has been on the job a short time he
hasn’t had enough experience. If he
has been on the job for some time,
there should be a change.
If he attends a meeting, he’s being
nosey. If he doesn’t attend he isn’t
interested in community projects. If
he’s giving away space he should give
a great deal, if he’s selling it, only
a little will do:
If he gets the names right, he
doesn’t get them all. If he doesn’t
get them right he is incompetent and
shouldn’t be allowed to report the
news.
If he makes a mistake, he hears
about if for weeks. If he doesn’t
make a mistake, he never hears
about it.
