IT’S THIS WAY

One often wonders if those
l.earded beatniks are devoted de

they are supposed to represent or

One of the most inspiring
things to happen here this Christ
mas season was the generous way
in which people responded to the
Empty Stocking Fund as the spon
sors of that most worthy charity,
the Butts County Jaycees, sought
funds to make Christmas a reality
for scores of needy families of
both races who would have doubt
lessly been forgotten otherwise.
Latest reports from the Jaycees

role of Santa Friday morning in
dicate that this may well be the
most successful Stocking Fund
Drive of all, financial wise, with
the corresponding need also the
most demanding.
An editor always likes to write
< f the worthwhile accomplish
ments of his people, collectively
or individually, and this is cer
tainly one of the brightest records
of the year. All hail the Jaycees
and the generousity of Butts citi
zens!
The Georgia Department of
Public Safety makes the grim pre
diction that some 34 Georgians
will not be around to enjoy an
other Christmas because of the
carnage on our highways and
roads. Their prophecies are alarm
ingly accurate.
Though the State Patrol and all
its branches will be out in full
force in an attempt to keep down
the holiday toll, the success or
failure of their dedicated mission
will in the main be determined by
how we as individual drivers per
form. It is in the power of each
driver to raise that figure by
reckless, careless or imprudent
driving of our chrome and metal
steeds, or lower it by careful,
sane and courteous driving and
road manners.
May patience and caution be
your driving precepts this Christ
vas and New Year’s season.
We feel we express the satis

growth and expansion of the

Gateway Luggage of Georgia,

Fusion Pillows have all taken root

proven an integral part in the
county's economic picture. All
three recently held Christmas
parties for their employees and
will begin the new year more
firmly entrenched than ever be
fore.
Christmas came in July for the
450 employees of the Pepperton
Cotton Mills, oldest and largest
of the county’s industries, with
the division of a $40,000 bonus
melon at vacation time. Business

as the textile industry gained
ground in 1959 in the fight
against low tariffs, cheaper labor
abroad, and the influx of textile
exports from foreign countries.

the number of employees will not

Today, as we observe Christ’s
birth, the entire world is beset
oy war tensions, and mankind is
frightened as he stands on the
threshold of the fantastic Space
Age.
New man-made stars whirl
-hiough the heavens, and people
jf many nations tremble at the
nought ol missile warfare trig
gered by electronic switches and
oeanud irom across the seas.
Strange instrument - carrying
objects approach the speed of
light as they encircle the earth,
sending back messages from the
unexplored outer space.
Today man stands, as he stood
1069 years ago, at the doorway
of a vast revelation. This time
■nan’s own staVs are charting out
course. They promise to push
back space frontiers and widen
nan’s domain in the universe.
Intellectual horizons will ex
pand as bold voyagers of space
land on the moon. Air travel and
adio communications will im
prove as a result of our explo
rations of the stratosphere area
with rockets and satellites. Never
since the birth of Jesus has man
cation in Georgia will enable that
large construction firm that spec
ializes in warehouses and indus
trial plants in seven Southern
states to make more and better
competitive bids on projects in
Georgia as well as having on hand
a company that is equipped and
experienced to build any plant
that might locate in Jackson.
1960 should prove a banner
year for our county’s fine and
diversified industries.
As we approach the natal date
of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Christ, whom sometimes we fail
to honor properly at this season,
may I extend to every reader and
friend of this paper the sincerest
best wishes for your merriest
Christmas and hope that the New
Year will be bright, prosperous,
and meaningful in the Spirit of
Him whose birthday we observe. I
The time of happy hearts and uplifted spirits is with us now in all
its glory. And, at this glad season, our special wish
is for you ... a sincere wish that this may be your best Christmas ever...
rich in happiness, friendships and lasting spiritual joy.

been offered so great an oppor
tunity.
However, the miracles of our
laboratories have fear instead of
faith—despair instead of courage.
When Jesus was born, accord
ing to St. Matthew, the Wise
Men came to Bethlehem to see
the Saviour. And a star “went
before them, till it came and
stood over where the young Child
was.” God placed the star in the
sky to guide them to the wonder
and glory and mystery of the
long-awaited event.
On this our Saviour’s birthday,
we sorely need the angel’s as
surance, “Be not afraid.” We also
need wise men to point out for
us the world of difference be
tween God’s creations and mere
man’s inventions.
Wise men of 1969 will recog
nize the sputnik satellites for
what they are—man-made gad
gets aimlessly circling in space.
Unlike the Star of Bethlehem
which pointed the way to the
Christ Child, the sputnik circles
and circles, until one day it will
quietly slip into the earth’s atmos
phere and disintegrate.
It is interesting to observe that
the Star of Bethlehem first light-

ed the sky over a world similar in
many respects to the world of to
day. Strong rulers contended for
thrones, and ordinary people were
treated as pawns.
The difference is that today we
have a choice—a choice between
being blown to bits by flying
nuclear warheads or following
the Child’s Star to the manger.
Through the centuries which have
rolled by since the Star appeared
in the East, through the tumult
and the tyranny, despite the fool
ish men who refused to recognize
the Saviour, the light of the
magic Star has never been ob
scured.
No missile that we or the Rus
sians can ever fire into inter
planetary space can have one-mil
lionth the power that the Star
of Hope and Love has had during
the centuries since it first ap
peared. Through the years it has
remained a symbol of God’s pro
mise that men of good will may
still have the peace and the abun
dant life which the Saviour pro
mised to all who will follow him.
The Star of Bethlehem still re
mains the same symbol of hope
that it has always been. What
ever man may do with his infin-
itesmal gnats-in-the-sky, he will
still be without peace and without
hope unless he believes the teach
ings of the Leader whose birth
we commemorate today. Faced as
we are today with international
conflict and possible atomic des
truction, we need more than ever
to follow the Disiclple of Peace.
But the end is not yet. Man’s
plots and plans are brief and
futile even when conceived in the
Kremlin, in Peiping, in Cairo —
or in the test tubes of our own
atomic laboratories. International
aggressors and their scientists will
depart and little that they do
will leave an impression on the
sands of time.

All that endures is the Divine
Purpose, which is as firm today
and as unchanged as it was 1959

Today, in spite of international
turmoil, in spite of the explosions
in Siberia and at Canaveral, man
kind has Christmas which stands
forever as an eternal guarantee
of the divinity of the Christ Child
and the invincibility of the
Christian hope.
Just as the Herods and the

When all men can recognize the

So, in a spirit of humility,
