IT’S THIS WAY
BY DOYLE JONES, JR.
Jest of the Week: Mom: Ches
ter, you’ve got to be a better boy.
Chester: How much will you
give me for being good?
Mom: How much? Chester, we
don’t pay little boys for being
good . . . Why can’t you be good
for nothing . . . like your father?
—Trux.
The United States is committed
to an on the site inspection >f
Russian offensive bases in Cuba.
This was one of the key points
in President Kennedy’s dramatic
Monday speech of a few weeks
ago.
This inspection should properly
be carried out by a United Na
tions team, or failing in this, by
members or appointees of the Rei
Cross.
The Soviet Union has proved on
many occasions that they can not
be trusted. They also must not be
appeased.
We must stand firm and reso
lute on our policy of inspection
in Cuba. Our aggressive stand in
demanding removal of offensive
Russian missile bases in Cuba has
our avowed enemy off balance, on
the defensive. To back down now
could conceivably bring us closer
to the brink of thermonuclear
war. The language of strength is
universal. It is one of the few
tongues Russia understands and
respects. To sheath our sword
now, to evidence the least sign of
weakness might be catastrophic.
The Sword of Damocles poises
precariously over the head of a
trembling and fearful world. Its
slender strand is frayed and worn,
but, prayerfully, it holds!
We congratulate the Jackson
High Red Devils upon their il
lustrious gridiron achievements
this season, during which they
compiled an 8-1-1 record, best
since 1951.
Two things stick out about this
Jackson team of ’62—its speed
and scoring punch. It may or may
not have been Jackson’s best
team, but certainly it was its fast
est. Man for man it must be one
of Georgia’s fleetest, most mobile
teams. With its great speed, the
Devils could and did score from
any position on the field, and
through its ninth game led all
Georgia teams in scoring with 341
points.
There were stars of the first
magnitude, but primarily this was
a team effort. From the lowliest
sub to the brighest star, it was
an all for one and one for all
attitude that led Jackson to its
fruitful season.
Much credit, quite naturally,
must go to Coaches Fred Bowers,
Don Crump and Charles Ragsdale.
They directed, worked, planned
and scouted with sure, deft hands,
keeping morale and zeal high.
And best of all, losing only
five seniors, the best is yet to
be. Jackson must be counted as
the team to beat for the 1963
sub-region title.

KHRUSHCHEV IS IN A CRISIS; OUR JOB
IS TO GAUGE, GUARD AGAINST DANGERS
By anybody’s estimate, world communism is in
difficulty.
The Chinese challenge to Soviet leadership has
never seemed louder or the division deeper.
1 eiping Radio is excoriating Nikita Khrushchev
daily for pulling a “Soviet Munich” in Cuba. Chinese
Communist satellites like Albania are echoing Pei
pings derisive attacks on Moscow’s backdown.
While these Communist right
wingers kick him from behind,
Khrushchev is submitting Soviet
hips to American interception
and inspection on the high seas,
scrambling home with his missiles
from this hem sphere on Amer
ican orders, and trying to explain
to Fidel Castro why he pulled out
on him.
Worse, as Russia retreats from
the Western Hemisphere, the
Chinese are collapsing Soviet
gains in the East.
Red China’s attack on India
forced Russia to choose between
them. In choosing China, the
Soviets lost out in India, where
Prime Minister Nehru now de
nounces them, Indians demon
strate against them and mobilize,

The Cuban crisis went a long
way toward uniting Latin Amer

tack on India is bound to carry
similar reverberations throughout
neutralist Asia. And emerging
Africa cannot fail to note and he

Western Europe, meanwhile, is
booming economically, uniting
politically and measuring up
strongly in its alliance with the
United States.
