WHAT DOES HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE MEAN?
By The Medical Ascociation
of Georgia
(Editor’s Note: This is one iu
a series of articles about your
health which will appear regular
ly in the Jackson Progress-Argus
as a public service feature.)
High blood pressure, one of our
commonest ailments, has many
causes but in all patients with
high blood pressure the heart has
to pump harder than normal to
circulate blood through the body’s
veins and arteries.
If the condition goes untreated
it can damage the heart, brain,
eyes, kidneys or some other
organ. It can also lead to fatal
heart attacks, strokes or dropsy.
There is no general rule for
the treatment of high blood pres
sure. Some patients are helped by
one method of treatment, others
by another, and still others by a
combination of several types of
treatment. What are some of
these?

Drugs help control high blood
pressure by relaxing the walls of
tiny blood vessels, thus making
the blood flow freer and easier.
Reducing and keeping the weight
down is another help. Excess
poundage puts an extra strain
on the heart. People with high
blood pressure are often put on a
low salt diet because the less
salt they eat the less fluid the
body retains. Excess fluid in the
body also causes the heart to
have to work harder.
Psychological problems con
tribute to high plood pressure in
some patients. When this is the
case, the patient should under
stand his tensions and how they
affect his body and make an ef
fort to reduce them. Sometimes
this is all the treatment he needs.
The outlook for a patient with
high blood pressure depends on
many factors. But the primary
factors are the damage the
disease has done to the body be
fore it responds to treatment and
the basic causes of the high blood
pressure.
DOC MAG SAYS:
1. If you have high blood pres
sure, cooperate with your physi
cian in treating it. Be patient
during trial periods of new medi
cines and in adapting to changes
in your diet and way of life.
2 Trust your doctor’s skill and
knowledge and follow his advice
—even if it means giving up
Snow Flurries
Thursday Hint
Of White Yule
Intermittent snow flurries,
brisk, brief and the first of the
season, fell over the mid-Georgia
area Thursday, heralding the ad
vent of Christmasy weather. The
first snow was seen here around
9 a. m. and continued at brief
intervals until early in the after
noon.
A frigid Arctic air mass
plunged southward across the na
tion’s center and gusty winds,
3. A relaxed way of life and
the practice of moderation will
help. So will getting proper rest
and recreation.

Several inches of snow, esti

blanketed the mountains and

Snow extended as far south as

Children, as customary, were
bubbling with excitement over the
snow and expressed hope for a

they have heard so much in song

is an extremely unlikely occur
