Light On The
Lesson
LOVE IN THE SOCIAL ORDER
Discussed By
REV. W. L. CAWTHON
Pastor Jackson Methodist Church
Scripture: John 15:9-14; Gala
tions 3:23-28; Ephesians 3:14-19;
Collossians 3:12-17; 1 John 3:-
11-18; 4:7-21.
The lesson this week involves
two major questions: What is
Christian love? and, What are the
implications of Christian love in
our social order?
Christian love has rightly been
called the greatest thing in the
world. Love is the foundation of
the Christian life. It is one of our
Christian beliefs to which we
have long given verbal assent—
and yet have found extremely
difficult in our relationship with
one another. Just what is Chris
tian love and how do we share it?
It is universal in its scope be
cause all men are son of God by
creation, and all men are poten
tially sons of God in the more
intimate sense of reconciliation
with him in Christ. In His com
mandment to love our neighbor
Jesus recognized the infinite
worth of every human personality
—man, woman, or child; fellow
citizen or foreigner; friend or
foe.
Christian love in this broader
sense certainly cannot mean to
like or to approve or even to
have cordial relationships with all
people. Even cordial relations
may be impossible with those
who insist on remaining antag
onistic. Such relations are always
a two-way matter. What does it
mean, then?
To love in this sense is to
maintain an attitude of positive,
active, good will toward the other
person or persons. It is a positive
concern and desire for his good
that will express itself in an ef
fort to help obtain that good
for him, even to the extent of
self-sacrifice. Love in this sense
is not dependent on the other
person’s race or nationality, or
even on his attitude toward us.
It is to be like God’s love referred
to in Romans 5:8: “But God
shows his love for us in that while
we were yet sinners Christ died
for us.”
According to our definition
this means active, positive, good
will toward people of all races
and nations, wanting the best
possible life for them. It means
wanting freedom and self-deter
mination for peoples who are
struggling for them. It means
wanting first-class citizenship for
the oppressed and recognition of
his dignity and his worth as a
person at every turn. It means
wanting all this for him to the
point of being willing to sacrifice
for it, whether the sacrifice be
extra tax money or some-cherish
ed traditions and practices.
Christian love in this broader
sense that Christ emphasized in
volves working for changes in the
social order. Recognition of the
individual life through contact
with God comes first. No change
in the social order can be effec

IN APPRECIATION
To my dearest friends and
neighbors: I can’t afford to send
thank you and Christmas cards
to all of you, so I am taking this
opportunity to wish you a Merry
Christmas and a very Happy New
Year. And thanks again for all
the visits, flowers, fruits, cards,
calls, notes, letters, and for all
the prayers while I was in the
hospital and since I came home.
You will never know how much
they helped me. They gave me
new hope. I still need your
prayers. I hope God will bless
and keep each one of you, and
give you a very prosperous New
Year. Love to all, Fleddie
Hardy.

point. Both are imperative to the
one who would follow the Master

THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . .
ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church ii ihe greatest factor
on earth for the building of char
acter and good citizenship. It is a
storehouse of spiritual values. With
out a strong Church, neither de
mocracy nor civilization can sur
vive. U here are four sound reasons
why every person should attend
services regularly and support the
Church. They are; (I) For his
own sake. (2) For his children's
sake. (3) For the sake of his com
munity and nation. (4) For the
sake of the Church itself, which
needs his moral and material sup
port. Plan to go to church regu
larly and read your Bible daily.

erosion. This bulletin can be very
helpful to anew homeowner in
the planning of the home site and
the development of the grounds
around the home as to a land
scaping plan that includes con
servation practices especially for
a suburban home site.
It described the ideal soil and
how to know what kind of soil
you have. There is a section on a
conservation plan that includes
safe disposal of water, and shrub
plantings to encourage helpful
wildlife, particularly birds.
The bulletin is illustrated with
photographs showing contour gar

One of a million carolers. And on Christmas Eve she will
bring comfort, reassurance, joy to many.
Mrs. J. is blind. She has never seen the carolers . . . but
eagerly she listens for their arrival.
Mr. H. is an invalid. His nurse invites the boys and girls
in and serves them cocoa. Mr. H. loves their happy smiles
as well as their joyous voices.
Little Paul R. broke his leg last Saturday. That’s why
he’s not caroling this year. But they’ll be around to sing
“Silent Night” under his window. That one is Paul’s favorite.
When you hear the carolers on Christmas Eve, pause
and consider the Love that inspires their singing. That Love
was born in a Bethlehem stable one holy night centuries ago.
