Wood Cos. Uses 300 Lbs. Silver
Dollars For Unique Yule Payment
JACKSON, Dec. 14 South
Georgia Wood of Jackson will use
300 pounds of silver dollars Fri
day to pay for wood the company
bought this week in Butts and
Henry counties to ship from here
to St. Regis Paper Cos. at Jack
sonville, Fla.
The $4,500 paid to the forest
owners and pulpwood harvesters
in this community was part of the
approximately half million dollars
worth of pulpwood and wood chip
which St. Regis buys every week
in five Southern states to use in
its pulp and paper mills at Jack
sonville and Pensacola.

silver coins to pay the thousands
of individuals who grow, cut and
truck the wood to the concentra
tion points in Alabama, Florida,
Georgia, Mississippi and South
Carolina from which the wood is
shipped to the mills.
The wood dealers chose this
method of payment to call atten
tion to the amount of money
which is added each week to the
economy of the localities where
they operate. The annual wood
bill of the two St. Regis mills, in
cluding the cost of freight from
wood yards such as the one heie,
is about $25 million.
“There are about 15 silver dol
lars to the pound,” said Bonner
Jones of South Georgia Wood,
"and I understand that it takes
about a pound and a quarter to
buy and get the average cord of
wood from the forest to the mill.”
COMPANY PURCHASES
St. Regis foresters said the
company’s purchases by states
every week approximates $225,-
000 in Florida, $175,000 in Geor
gia and $90,000 in Alabama with
the remainder coming from Mis
sissippi and South Carolina.
Each of the dealers made ar
rangements with his local bank
to supply the coins used in the
huge Southwide payoff. The com
pany’s settlement with the dealers
and the railroads was made this
week by the usual and conven
tional checks, with a total weight
of less than five pounds.
Other concentration points in
Georgia where the silver dollar
payments were made include

man, Richland, Ideal, Cuthbert,
Allentown, LaGrange, Tyrone,
Baxley, Douglas and Waycross.
