Hogansville Rites Unite Miss
Marva Martin, Charles O'Kelley
The marriage of Miss Marva
Cooper Martin, of Hogansville,
and Mr. Charles Saxon O’Kelley,
of Grantville, was solemnized in
the First Methodist Church of
Hogansville in a double ring cere
mony performed by the Rev. Carl
McGrady of Alpharetta and the
Rev. Frank P. Dorris of Hogans
ville, Saturday evening, December
1, at eight o’clock.
The church was decorated with
woodwardia fern, palms, and
western honeysuckle, forming a
background for groupings of
cathedral candelabra. A mammoth
cluster of foliage centered the
choir and an arch of burning
white tapers spanned the central
decoration.
The prenuptial music included
selections from Schubert, Men
delssohn, Widor, Weiniawski,
Grieg, Guonod and Each, played
by Mrs. G. Bruce Head, Jr., or
ganist. The soloist, Mr. Foster
Leverrett of Jackson, sang “Be
cause,” and “I Love You Truly.”
The traditional wedding marches
were used during the ceremony
Mrs. Head played Debussys “Clair
de Lune.”
Mr. J. Harold O’Kelley served
his son as best man and the usher
groomsmen were Mr. R. Leon
O’Kelley, Jr., of Grantville, Mr.
Rodney E. Dial of Newnan, cou
sins of the groom; Mr. W. L. Mar
ton, 111, Hogansville, brother of
the bride; and Mr. Guy M. Mann,
Jr., of Atlanta.
The bride’s attendants were
Miss Beverly Boyd Lowe, maid of
honor, Tampa, Fla., Mrs. James
G. McEver, Jr., Atlanta, Miss
Patricia Ann Jackson, Columbia,

Judy Jackson of Hogansville.
They were gowned alike in floor
length dresses of pomgranate De
Luna. The basque bodice featured
a portrait neckline and short
sleeves. Delicate side ribbon bows
accented the controlled bell
skirts. They wore long white
gloves and carried white fur
muffs on which Happiness roses
were overlaid.
The bride entered with her fa
ther, William Lee Martin, Jr.,
who gave her in marriage. She
wore a formal gown of white
bouquet taffeta fashioned along
princess lines. The bodice fea
tured a square neckline which
was accepted by a delicate pearl
encrusted bow, and short sleeve3.
Back detail was provided by a
tailored bow overlaid by a Bian
chi rose centered with pearls. The
bell shaped skirt cascaded into a
bouffant chapel train. Her four
layer pouf veil was of silk illus
ion. She carried a bouquet of
white yellow throated hybrid
orchids and stephanotis, inter
spersed with pearls, crystals,
white satin leaves, and showered
stephanotis, created especially
for her by her cousin, Mr. James
M. Edwards of Atlanta. Her only
ornament was a diamond lavalier,
gift of the groom.
The bride’s mother, Mrs. W. L.
Martin, Jr., wore a floor length
sheath of beige brocade with a
Watteau panel, shoes to match
and long beige gloves. Her cor
sage was lime green cypripedium
orchids.

Mrs. J. Harold O’Kelley, the
groom’s mother, wore a nile green
satin floor length dress with a
bolero and controlled bell shaped
skirt. With it she wore matching
shoes and long white gloves. Her
corsage was brown cypripedium
orchids.
During the ceremony, Miss
Susannah Foster of Griffin and
Jackson, remained at the Martin
heme and received friends who
dropped by after the ceremony
to review the gifts which were
on display at the residence.
Immediately following the
i ceremony, the bride’s parents en
tertained at a reception at the
Highland Country Club, La-
Grange. The mothers of the
young couple, the bride and
groom, and the bride’s attendants
received the guests against the
mantle of the club which was
banked with magnolia and west
ern huckleberry, and held a cen
tral arrangement of snapdragons,
carnations, and roses, shading
from pale pink to deep red and
featuring the Happiness roses
carried by the bridesmaids. Pink
tapers highlighted the arrange
ment.
Mr. and Mrs. Claude A. Mc-
Kibben and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
E. Harris Jr. welcomed the guests
at the front door, and Mr. and
Mrs. Robert R. McGee presented
them to the receiving line.
Mrs. B. F. Redmond directed
the guests to the bride’s register
which was kept by Mrs. A. W.
Newton of Jackson. The table was
covered with a pink taffeta cloth
overlaid with white on which was
placed the bride’s bouquet and
one ornate silver candle stick
holding a lighted pink taper.
The bride’s table was covered
with a white cut work cloth over
a pale pink taffeta skirt, and cen
tered with a four-tier wedding
cake in pink and white, embossed
with myriads of tiny pink roses
and topped with a cascade of
orchids and stephanotis. Flanking
the cake were two five-branched
candelabra holding pink tapers

and arrangements of snap
dragons, carnations, and Hap
piness roses shading from pale
pink to red. Large bows of pink
net were tied beneath the ar
rangement and fell softly to the
table. Two silver trays held the
decorated mints which were pink
and made in the form of tiny
shoes and wedding bells. Mrs. B.
H. Brock and Mrs. Ben Guy ser
ved the cake, after the couple had
cut the first slice.
A similar arrangement was
placed on the table from which
coffee was poured by Mrs. A. C.
Link and Mrs. T. J. Jackson from
two silver services placed at each
end of a long table covered with
a white embroidered cloth over
a pink taffeta skirt. Four small
decorated silver bowls held nuts
and mints.
Punch was served from another
table also carrying out the pink
and white color scheme by Mrs.
George Holroyd and Mrs. John D.
Artley. The silver bowl was en
circled by a wreath of boxwood,
draped with clusters of pink
grapes. A large box of pink and
Happiness ribbon which cascaded
to the floor was placed in the
center of the arrangement.
Mr. and Mrs. O’Kelley left for
a short wedding trip to an undis
closed destination. She wore a
beige wool jersey sheath with
matching packet, beige reptile
shoes and bag, a black dyed mink
hat, with black gloves and the
orchid from her bouquet. After
January, the couple will reside in
Athens, where Mr. O’Kelley will
complete his degree at the Uni
versity.
The bride is the grand daugh
ter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph E.
Edwards of Jackson.
