Light On The
Lesson
GOD COMES TO US
DiicuMed By
REV. W. L. CAWTHON
Pastor, Jackson Methodist Church
Scripture: Isaiah 6; 9:6-7; He
brews 1:14; John 1:1-18.
There is no day in all the year
when as much of a warm glow
surrounds and flows from persons
of the Christian world as on
Christmas Day. Usually at this
time we spend the lesson hour re
calling the thrilling story of
Jesus’ birth. Perhaps this lesson
will lead us to become more keen
ly aware that God has come and
does come to us every day of our
lives, that this gift of himself
was no completed in just one oc
currence in human history.
Whenever we open our hearts and
lives in faith, God comes in.
What the Incarnation means to
each of us personally will depend
upon our response in faith and
love. It depends on our willing
ness to receive what God so
generously offers. This is where
faith becomes necessary. That
Jesus was born in Bethlehem is
a declaration of history; that he
is born in our hearts today can
only be a declaration of our faith.
Phillips Brooks suggests the
meaning of God’s coming in his
hymn:

“0 holy Child of Bethlehem!
Decend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, end enter in,
Be born in us today!”
What do these words say to
you? What changes might you
need to make in your life if
Christ be born in you today?
What changes would occur in so
ciety if the prayer of this hymn
were granted? What would hap
pen if he really were “Born in
us?”
Indeed there would be some
changes made in us. Human be
in"s would be a lot less self
centered and greedy, irritable and
violent. We would al! be mueh
more understanding of others; we
would appreciate one another and
co-operate a lot more than we
do.
If Jesus were “born in us to
day” just among church members
the courts would not be as busy.
We would not have half the fam
ily quarrels and separations and
divorces. Adults would not des
troy themselves with alcohol,
automobiles, gambling, and pro
miscuity. Delinquency in all ages
would dwindle.
Don’t forget the fruits >f
Christian experience if Christ
were born in us today. Adequate
care would be provided for the
aging, for the physically and men
tally ill, for prisoners and handi
capped, and the unemployed. We
would all take much more respon
sibility for sharing one another's
burdens in the spirit of Christ.
If we let the Lord live in us,
we would carry on our business
and agriculture with a sense of
stewardship for all the persons in
volved, high and low, and we
would treat our natural resources
as gifts of God to many genera
tions to come.
We would welcome Christ as
Prince of Peace, in our own
lives and among all nations. We
would make him Lord of our
foreign policy, and follow his
leadership in United Nations. We
would trust his persuasive power
more than bombs, and we would
expect him to be just as real

universe for his kingdom of love
and live for it above all else.
