Funds Urgently
Needed b Empty
Stockbg Drive
Christmas will be dreary for a
number of small children in Butts
County this year, unless contri
butions are received in our Empty
Stocking Fund Drive, John Sher
rell ,Drive Chairman commented
this week.
An unprecedented number of
applicants signed up for the aid
offered by the Empty Stocking,
sponsored by the Butts County
Jaycees, and the club cannot cope
with such a large number unless
money is received from outside
sources, Mr. Sherrell said.
It is the custom of the club to
give each child an outfit of
clothes, a basket of fruit and a
suitable toy. According to Mr.
Sherrell, the aid this year will
have to be cut drastically unless
funds become available at the
last minute.
Mr. Sherrell urged anyone who
would like to make a contribution
to either mail it to him in care
of Haisten Funeral Home or leave
it at Gilbert’s Furniture Com
pany. He pointed out that good
useable toys are still needed and
can be left with him or at the
Cliett Redman Warehouse on
Second Street.
The Jaycees are planning sev
eral last minute fund raising
projects with an old fashion
square dance scheduled Saturday
night, December 22, at the Tow
aliga Community Clubhouse.

New Christmas
Decorations
Bring Hazards
New Christmas decorating
ideas and material come along
every year. Unfortunately, along
with them come new hazards,
points out Miss Lucile Higgin
botham, health specialist for the
Cooperative Extension Service,
University of Georgia College of
Agriculture.
She called attention to some of
the more recent hazards that have
accompanied new decorating ma
terials.
One of these relatively new
ideas is the mixing of “angel
hair” and snow spray. Both of
these items are advertised as non
flammable, and when used alone
are essentially safe. However, the
National Fire Protection Associ
ation has warned that when com
bined, as on a Christmas tree,
they become so flammable that
only a touch of flame sends them
into a burst of fire.
The metallic Christmas tree
that is becoming popular doesn’t
present the fire hazard of the
real tree, but it has introduced
another hazard, electric shock.
Placing lights on these metal
trees is dangerous, for should the
wiring be faulty the whole tree
could become “alive” and electro
cute anyone touching it. Manu
facturers recommend that spot
lights, in colors, be used for
lighting effect on these trees.
Plastic foam used for orn
aments and other Christmas deco
rations is not fireproof. It burns
easily, and an ornament on a tree
could be ignited by a spark, she
said. However, blue colored plas
tic foam has been treated with a

chemical to make it fire resistant,
she continued.
A gimmick advertised for holi
day fun is the “dancing moth
ball.” When moth balls are placed
in a colored solution of vinegar
and water and baking soda is
added, carbon dioxide is released
causing the moth balls to jump.
As moth balls are poisonous, this
is not a game for children.
Miss Higginbotham listed some
other Christmas ideas that could
lead to poisoning young children.
Bubbling tree lights contain
methylene chloride which if swal
lowed could cause slight poison
ing. Fire salts that burn in vari
colored flames on logs have bases
which may cause illness if swal
lowed.
Christmas decorations are na
turally attractive to small chil
dren, so the best rule is to keep
them out of children’s reach, Miss
Higginbotham concluded.
