Southern Railway
Handles Cuban
Supplies Free
Southern Railway System al
ready has handled free of charge
for the American Red Cross some
1,300,000 pounds of food and
medical supplies to be used in
freeing prisoners held by the
Castro regime in Cuba, and more
cars are enroute, the railway said.
The cars move to Fort Ever
glades, Fla., where the supplies
are expected to be loaded on the
S. S. African Pilot for shipment
overseas to Havana. Some of the
tonnage handled by Southern
originated on the railway’s lines
from points as far apart as
Greensboro, N. C., and E. St.
Louis, Md., and other cars were
received from connecting rail
roads taking part in the mercy
mission.
Southern’s president, D. W.
Brosnan, said that the railroad
movement of the mercy supplies
accounts for 70 percent of all of
the tonnage being sent free of
charge to Florida and “we are
happy to be able to participate in
this humanitarian effort.”
