Miss Robinson Hostess at Kitchen
Shower Feting Miss Ellen Weaver
Miss Ellen Weaver, bride-elect,
was the central figure at a kit
chen shower, given in her honor,
by Miss Irene Robinson, at the
home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Guy Robinson, of Covington on
Saturday.
Focal point of the foyer was a
chest arrangement of gilded
fruit and ivy, beneath a sconce,
holding white candles.
Similar sconces of white can
dles flanked the living room man
tel composition of boxwood fol
iage interspersed with china rein
deer. Red carnations in an an
tique lamp arrangement on a
desk, accentuated the season’s
colors.
Scarlet pyrocantha and holly
berries were effectively combined
with greenery and red candles in
the den arrangements.
The tea table, overlaid with a
Christmas green cloth, featured a
Williamsburg Christmas tree of
apples and pineapples, as its cen
terpiece. A silver service, from
which Miss Robinson, wearing a
forest green velvet dress, with
Christmas corsage, poured coffee;
silver trays of dainty, assorted
sandwiches, white embossed petits
fours, topped with spun sugar, red
poinsettias, and other Christmas
confections; and silver compotes
of toasted nuts, perfected the at
tractive appointments.
Guests were invited into the
solarium, after refreshments were
served, where arrangements of
poinsettias, red berries and can-

the hostess, was presented with
the bevy of colorful wrapped
gifts, in clothes baskets in yellow,
which is the kitchen decor plan
ned by the bride-to-be.
Among the thirty-five guests
were Mrs. Vincent Jones, mother
of the groom-to-be, and Mrs. Bird
O’Neal, of Jackson.
The hostess was assisted in en
tertaining by her mother, Mrs.
Guy Robinson.
Miss Weaver will become the
bride of Mr. Vincent Barrett
Jones at a ceremony January 19
at the First Methodist Church of

BUTCH WELLS TENDERED
FOURTH BIRTHDAY PARTY
Butch Wells, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Eugene Wells, celebrated
his fourth birthday on Sunday
afternoon with a party at his
home.
Guests gathered at three
o’clock and admired the lovely
birthday cake, baked and given
Butch as a gift by Mrs. Gloria
Sims. Following the serving of
ice cream and cake, Butch opened
his many lovely gifts.

Mrs. T. J. Franklin and Miss
Myrtice Franklin of Barnesville
were visitors in Jackson Satur
day.
Mr. Oren Gunn was admitted
to Griffin-Spalding County Hos
pital on Saturday suffering from
a back injury. Mr. Gunn’s con
dition early in the week was re
ported as very painful.
Mrs. J. F. Rodgers of Gaines
ville arrived Sunday for a week’s
visit with her sister, Mrs. India
Bailey, and Mr. and Mrs. Leu

Mercer Observes
130th Birthday
On January 14
MACON,Ga. —The 130th anni
versary of the founding of Mer
cer University will be observed
in annual Founders’ Day cere
monies on the campus January
14.
Dr. L. D. Johnson, pastor of the
First Baptist Church, Greenville,
S. C., will be the speaker at
ceremonies in Willingham Chapel
at 10:00 a. m. He will speak on
“The Role of the College in the
Southern Baptist Convention.”
Dr. Johnson was chairman of
the Department of Religion at the
University of Richmond (Va.)
prior to becoming pastor of the
Greenville Church early in 1962.
Dr. Rufus G. Harris, president
of Mercer University, will preside
at the Founders’ Day program
and will introduce Dr. Johnson.
A meeting of the Board of
Trustees of Mercer University
will be held following the pro
gram in Willingham Chapel.
The Founders’ Day ceremonies
are designed to renew the feeling
of intellectual loyalty to Chris
tian education as interpreted by
Mercer University. Mercer Uni
versity was founded on January
14, 1833, at Penfield, Green
County, as Mercer Institute.
