Health Insurance
Needs Analyzing
Every Few Year?
Approximately 64% of Geor
gia’s population has some type
(or some amount) of insurance
protection against the cost of ill
ness or injury, the Georgia Hos
pital Association reports.
But the Association cautions
the public that many of the health
insurance policies or contracts
now in force may fall far short
of meeting reasonable needs. A
family needs to reassess its
health insurance from time to
time, just as it does the fire in
surance on the home. In both
instances, the key question is
whether the insurance will re
place loss to the extent desired,
when considering current price
or cost trends.
A typical family will incur a
hospital bill on an average of
every 2Vz years, the Association
stated. “Facing the inevitable, the
only way for the average family
to meet the cost of illness is to
prepay or budget for it through
the device of health insurance.”
Whatever form of coverage is
obtained or already held, wheth
er Blue Cross or through an in
surance company, the Association
recommends that the following
points be carefully checked.
Examine the contract to see
exactly what it covers. How much
does it pay toward the hospital
room charge? (The average pri
vate room charge in Georgia is
sl6, and the average semi-private
is sl2 per day).
How much does the contract
pay toward other hospi ta 1
charges, such as laboratory fees,
drugs, x-rays, operating room,
anesthesia, etc.? These charges
can run between SIOO and S2OO
or more per hospital stay, de
pending on the type of illness or
surgery.
How flexible is your contract?
Does it put a ceiling on items
such as laboratory, x-ray and
drugs—services you will likely
need most—or does it allow for
these items to be lumped, or in
terchanged if necessary? You
need this flexibility in your con
tract, or preferably unlimited
coverage in some of the items.
How many days coverage in
the hospital during any one con
finement does your contract of
fer? More importantly, what does
the contract stipulate about ex
clusions (or a waiting period) be
cause of a previous condition of
health? Does the contract cover
dependents of the insured?
What does the contract say
about cancellation, or renewal at
modified rates?
The total average expense per
day (including the room charge)
in Georgia hospitals is currently
S2B to $32, according to the
Georgia Hospital Association. The
Association urges the public to
examine health insurance—both
as to hospital benefits and physi
cians' fees. For advice, consult
the administrator of your nearest
hospital or write the Georgia Hos
pital Association, 2025 Peachtree
Road, N. E., Atlanta 9, Georgia.
8 Millionth Phone
Placed Lockheed
On December 27
The eight millionth Southern
Bell telephone was installed De
cember 27 at the Lockheed-
Georgia Company in Marietta.
John S. Seige, Southern Bell’s
Georgia vice president and gen
eral manager, made the official
presentation of the telephone to
W. A. Pulver, Lockheed-Georgia
president.
The actual installation was
made in the office of Robert H.
Lassetter, Lockheed small busi
ness coordinator, who placed the
first call to Oro Manufacturing
Company, Monroe, N. C.
“This illustrates the continuing
economic expansion in the South
and Georgia has been a leader
in this development,” said Mr.
Seigler.
Southern Bell serves nine
southeastern states: Alabama,
Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Lou
isiana, Mississippi, North Caro
lina, South Carolina and Tennes
see. There are now 1,188,750
telephones in Georgia.
It was 50 years before South
ern Bell reached its first million
telephones. Ten years ago there
were only four million telephones.
In the past decade the number
of telephones has doubled.
Altogether Southern Bell ope
rates 1155 exchanges and em
ploys nearly 65,000 people.
There are 138 exchanges in Geor
gia and approximately 10,000 em
ployees.
Here in Jackson the number of
telephones has increased by 1000
within the past ten years, said Al
bert Harrell, manager.
