Cancer of Colon Takes Heavy Toll!
BY HOKE WAMMOCK, M. O.
(EDITOR’S NOTE: This is one
in a series of articles by physi
cian board members of the Amer
ican Cancer Society’s Georgia Di
vision to inform our readers of
the best ways to guard their lives
and the lives of those they love
against needless suffering and
untimely death from cancer.)
Cancer of the colon and rectum
strikes more Americans than any
other single form of cancer, more
than 70,000 each year. Colon and
rectal cancers can be cured if
properly treated in the early
stage.
This is why the American Can
cer Socity has launched an all-out
educational campaign to inform
people how to guard their lives
against this form of cancer,
which claimed some 39,000 lives
last year. It occurs about equally
in men and women.
Most colon and rectal cancer
deaths are preventable. The key
to early diagnosis is an examin
ation with a proctoscope as part
of the routine health checkup.
This is a slim, lighted tube which
is passed gently into the rectum
and lower colon by which the
physician can inspect the walls
visually. Medical authorities feel
that this procedure can today
help save more lives from cancer
than any other step in the annual
health checkup.
One of the most important
known causative factors in cancer
of the colon and rectum is the
formation of small grape-like
tumors called polyps. The doctor
usually can detect these by digi
tal examination or by the use of
the proctoscope. The polyps can
then be removed quickly and
easily, thus eliminating the dan
ger of cancer, even before the
patient has noticed any Bigns of
anything wrong. But to prevent
it in this way requires careful
regular examinations of apparent
ly well people by a physician.
Some possible warning signs of
cancer of the colon and rectum
are bleeding:, persistent constipa
tion or diarrhea, gradually in
creasing anemia (deficiency in
the red blood cells), loss ut
weight, explosive or painful bowel
movement, and a sense of dis
comfort or a feeling of fullness
in the rectum after a bowel move
ments. Often this kind of cancer
is confused with hemorrhoids
(piles) because some of the symp
toms are quite similar. But it is
foolhardy and dangerous to as
sume that rectal bleeding is the
result of hemorrhoids. The intelli
gent person will help to protect
himself from this type of cancer
by going to his doctor for a
checkup immediately if any
symptoms appears. The symptom
may not mean cancer, but your
doctor is the person to tell for
sure.
Since the American Cancer So
ciety made breast cancer and
uterine cancer prime targets for
its educational programs, many
thousands of additional lives have
been saved from these sites of
cancer because of earlier detec
tion and proper treatment.
In its new campaign against
cancer of the colon and rectum,
the Society strongly urges that
all adults have a complete health
checkup at least once a year in
cluding a complete rectal examin
ation.
With the protoscope, phsycians
can detect most colon and rectal
cancers long before any symp
toms appear, at the stage when
cancer is curable. And this form
of cancer, when detected early
and properly treated, can be
cured.
No one knows where or when
cancer will strike, so every one
should be on guard.
The American Cancer Society
has free literature on this and
other types of cancer. Also, the
Society has anew film titled
"Life Story" which tells how to
guard against cancer of the colon
and rectum. The film should be
seen by all groups which meet
regularly and by the employees
in firms participating in the So
ciety’s “Earlier Treatment Em
ployee Education Program.” For
more information on obtaining
these contact your local unit of
the Cancer Society, or write to
American Cancer Society, Geor
gia Division, 2025 Peachtree
Road, N. E., Atlanta 9, Georgia.
