DIVERSION PROGRAMS
GETTING RESULTS
Farmers participating on the
1961 and 1962 feed grain pro
grams is bringing about a one
third reduction in feed grain
stocks, William L. Lanier, State
Executive Director, Georgia Ag
riculture Stabilization and Con
servation Service Office, said to
day. By next October 1, feed
grain stocks are expected to be
about 28 million tons below the
84.7-million-ton level of October
1, 1961, he declared. Wheat
stocks will be down about 100
million bushels next July 1 as
u result of participation in the
1962 wheat stabilization program.
Lani e r cited these solid
achievements in bringing produc
tion into line with needs through
the diversion of wheat and feed
grain acreage to conserving uses.
By participating in the diversion
programs, the farmer earns a di
version payment and price-sup
port payment, and he also quali
fies for a regular price-support
loan or purchase agreement on
his crop.
The signup period for 1963-
crop corn, grain sorghum, barley,
and wheat in spring wheat areas
under the voluntary feed grain
and wheat stabilization programs
has been set for February 1
through March 22, 1963. The
signup period for wheat in winter
areas ended December 14.
“We hope,” Lanier said, “that
between now and the time for
filing program applications, farm
ers will get all the facts about
the diversion programs, and then
plan their 1963-crop production
around the programs. These 1963
programs provide a means of
making further progress toward
solving our problems of surplus
stocks and low farm income.”
Price support on 1963-crop
grain sorghum, and barley will
be available only to producers
taking part in the 1963 feed
grain program. Wheat farmcis
who did not sign up to participate
in the 1963 wheat stabilization
program may qualify for price
support loans or purchase agree
ments (but not for price-support
payments) by complying with
their farm wheat acreage allot
ments.
The price-support payments
are anew feature of the 1963
diversion programs. They will be
made on the normal production
of the 1963 feed grain or wheat
acreage, as the case may be, re
gardless of the farm’s actual
yield and also without regard lo
whether the crop is fed, mar
keted, or placed under price sup
port.

Many Visitors
Toured Lloyd
Shoals Plant
Approximately 430 visitors
toured the Georgia Power Com
pany’s Lloyd Shoals Dam during
1962, according to Plant Superin
tendent B. Y. Lunceford.
Mr. Lunceford said that the
total included many groups of
school children, Scouts, 4-H, FFA
and FHA youths, civic club or
ganizations and tourists.
The Lloyd Shoals hydroelectric
generating station, located at
Jackson, is one of 25 Georgia
Power Company generating
plants providing power for Geor
gia’s industrial, agricultural, resi
dential and commercial require
ments.
These 25 generating stations
were hosts to some 10,000 visitors
in 1962.
While supplying the major
power needs for this area, Lloyd
Shoals is linked via a statewide
transmission system with the
company’s other 24 power plants.
In addition, through an extensive
interchange system with power
suppliers in adjoining states, con
sumers in this area could, in case
of emergency, receive power
from as far away as Minnesota.
Tours of Lloyd Shoals can be
arranged by contacting Superin
tendent Lunceford.
