Light On The
Lesson
JESUS THE CONCEALER
Discussed By
REV. S. L. WATERHOUSE
Putor, First Baptist Church
Mark 4:10-20,33,34.
Having exposed the evils of the
Scribes and Pharisees, Jesus with
drew from Capernaum to con
tinue His ministry by the shores
of the Sea of Galilee. A great
multitude followed Him from
many different places and He
healed many of the sick and af
flicted and cast out many demons.
During this time, Jesus went up
into a mountain and there ap
pointed twelve men to be apos
tles. The crowd returns and Jesus
is so busy that He does not have
time to eat. Scribes come down
from Jerusalem and accuse Jesus
of casting out demons by the
power of demons. Having been
exposed by Jesus, they tried to
expose Him but they failed with
their false charges. The family
of Jesus attempted to get Him
to leave the crowd and rest. They
also seem to think that He is in
sane. His reply was that those
who do the will of God are His
brother, sister and mother.
Jesus now begins to conceal
His teaching in parables. A par
able is a short story which con
ceals an important truth. When
Jesus exposed the Scribes and
Pharisees with direct teaching,
He aroused their hatred against
Him. With parables, He could
conceal the light of truth from
those who love darkness and at
the same time reveal the truth
to His followers. “Unto you is
given the mystery of the kingdom
of God, but unto them that are
without, all things are done in
parables.”
Jesus uses three parables to
teach His followers about the
kingdom of God and at the same
time to conceal these truths from
the Scribes and Pharisees. The
first parable has been called the
Parable of the Sower or the Par
able of the Soils, but I prefer to
call it The Parable of Hearts. The
soil in this parable is actually the
heart—the soul of a person. First
there is the path heart—hardened
by selfish desires and evil habits.
The word cannot take root. Sec
ond is the petrified heart— a thin
layer of soil covering a rock. The
word takes root, but the hot sun
of tribulation and persecution
withers and kills the plant. Third
ia the preoccupied heart—the
word is chocked out by other in
terests. Fourth is the pure heart—
sincere, earnest, believing and
obedient. The word grows and
bears fruit. The Scribes and
Pharisees knew well The Law and
the traditions of the rabbis. They
were most meticulous in obeying
their teachings. Jesus taught His
followers with this parable that
the Scribes and Pharisees were
spiritually deaf.
The second parable is that of
the growing grain in Mark 4:-
26-29. The Jews were looking for
a Messiah to set up an earthly

Student Of

BY JANIE RIDGEWAY
DONNY PELT
When you are introduced to
someone for the first time, you
usually give the standard greet
ing, “How do you do?” However,
if this person to whom you have
been introduced could read your
mind, he’d be able to answer the
questions about himself which are
popping up there. Questions such
as “What school do you attend?”,
“What athletic activities do you
participate in?”, and “What are
your hobbies?” which are cloud
ing your train of thought.
It is my pleasure to introduce
you to our Student of the Week,
Donny Pelt, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. E. Pelt of Jackson.
Naturally many questions have
already popped into your mind,
so I shall try to answer a few
of them. Donny is now a junior
at Jackson High School. He is
and has been very active in ath
letic activities such as playing
baseball in his 9th, 10th and 11th
grades of school; playing football
in his 10th and 11th grades of
school; and playing basketball in
his 9th, 10th, and 11th grades
of school. While playing Little
League baseball, Donny was elec
ted to the Little League All Stars,
and while playing Babe Ruth
baseball he was elected to the
Babe Ruth All Stars. Donny en

kingdom—a king to march in with
his army and drive out the Rom
ans. In this parable, Jesus teaches
that after the seed is sown, we
are to patiently wait for the har
vest.
The third parable is of the
mustard seed in Mark 4:30-34.
The Scribes and Pharisees looked
upon Jesus and His followers as
a small band of obscure and
powerless fanatics. They would
never amount to anything. The
Scribes and Pharisees would see
to that. In this parable, Jesus
taught that the kingdom of God
has great potential. Though small
and insignificant in the beginning
it would become greater than all
the herbs. It will overshadow all
other religions. The Scribes and
Pharisees missed the point of this
parable.
Spiritual truths are for those
who earnestly desire to know
them. “If any man will do His
will, he shall know of the doc
trine, whether it be of God, or
whether I speak of myself.” John
7:17.
THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
He is a member of the Science
Club, and he is president of the
Library Club this school term.
Donny received his Jackson “Red
Devil” jacket during his ninth
grade for his hard work in the
field of athletics. He has held a
perfect attendance record during
his ninth and tenth grades.
Maybe you have already known
Donny for many years or maybe
you are meeting him for the first
time. In either case, maybe you
have learned something new
about Donny from having read
this article.
Donny, I hope you do not mind
being introduced to the hundreds
of readers of this article. May
I and, along with me, everyone
wish you the very best life has
to offer to the “get-up-and go
getters” of the advancing world of
tomorrow.

Do you remember the undivided attention you gave
to a story-teller . . . when you first heard Cinderella,
Snow White, or some gallant warrior bold? It seems
so long ago. And yet, that attention reveals within
ourselves more than dreams; it reveals a secret long
ing after mysteries, after the things we do not under
stand, but somehow love.
Religion, in a way, is somewhat like that. Every
body is religious! But, of course, everybody doesn’t
call it that! Nevertheless, there is in the heart of man
a secret yearning, a wish, a hope for things eternal.
We express those wishes in church.
And somehow God hears our wishes and consoles
and explains. That is a very important part of the
Churchy for it is a place of consolation and under
standing, a place where wishes (prayers) are heard,
where the mysteries of life gain new meaning.

It ia a storehouse of spiritual val

are: (1) For his own sake. (2)
For his children’s sake. (3) For
the eake of hie community and
