5700 YEARS UNDER THE SEA! That’s the combined
time the electron tubes have lasted in the undersea tele
phone cables along Bell System routes to Europe, Havana,
Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Alaska. The 1,608 tubes now in
use have worked without failure for over 50,000,000 tube
hours or the equivalent of 5700 years. This is also equal
to 100 TV sets operating 24 hours a day for three and a
half years!

MISS NOSEY?
What’s In A Name? My Monickers Run
From Brenda Starr to Fat Mamma!
BY BARBARA WISE
If I have a tombstone and if
anyone cares enough to have
something inscribed upon it, the
epitaph will probably read, “She
had many nicknames."
Most of these nicknames were
officially bestowed upon me the
day I set foot into the newspaper
office. It is an established fact
that no one can work for a week
ly newspaper in a small town and
retain their Christian name for
very long.
Being a nosey person by nature
the title of Miss Nosey hasn’t
bothered me too much. Realizing
that jobs minding everybody’s
business are usually performed
for no pay, I feel lucky to have
one with salary in this category.
The titles of Official Snooper
and Scoop arc taken in good
humor because they are meant in
fun. They have to be used in jest
for whoever heard of a weekly
newspaper scooping the news!
The complimentary nicknames
of famous newspaper people are
always nice. It does make an old
girl feel good to be called Brenda
Starr even if she does wear a
bikini on the job and is a fictional
character.
The titles come and go. For a
few’ days the name Tub stuck
after my laughter at a t. u. b.
story.
Occasionally someone notices
my big feet and off we go on
the foot names. At times like
these I’m always glad that my
ears don’t stick out too much,
that my nose isn’t crooked nor
my eyes crossed.
The crowning touch to nick
names usually comes from my
be available to visitors at the din
ing hall.
boss or the children. He called
me a female preacher recently
after reading something I had
written and my children delight
in hearing the uproar when they
call me Fat Mamma.
You certainly may call me
whatjamagig if you like, I’m not
sure either what my name is.
