Lesson
THE HIGHWAY PATROL
Discu.aed By
REV. S. L. WATERHOUSE
Psalms 11; 72:1-4; 82
On my way back from Griffin
one afternoon, I came around the
curve at Double Cabins and pas
sed a car which was poking along
in front of me. I was driving the
powerful car that Sheriff Ham
had traded in and which I had
bought. To push the accelerator
to the floor was like turning on
a rocket. It would jump from 60
to 90 miles per hour in a split
second. To accomplish this burst
of speed consumed only five gal
lons of gasoline.
After coming around this curve
at Double Cabins, I cruised on
toward Jackson. I had not gone
far when a highway patrolman
was signalling for me to pull
over. Somehow I had forgotten
about the highway patrol. The
speed limit on that curve is 35
miles per hour, and I had come
around it much faster than that.
I had not seen the patrolman and
after all, I was in a hurry to get
back to Jackson.
Isn’t this our attitude to God
so often? We seem to forget
about Him. We don’t see Him
and we go on our way disregard
ing His laws. But then one day He
stops us. What is your reaction
to such an interruption . The
answer to this question reveals
your attitude toward God.
Why do we have a highway
patrol? For our protection. It ’s
not safe to drive around that
curve at the speed I did that af
ternoon. The warning ticket I was
given was reminder of this fact.
Later several people have been in
wrecks on the Griffin Highway.
How many of these were caused
from driving too fast?
That highway patrolman did
me a favor. I have driven with
greater care ever since. This, I
think, is the idea of this week’s
Sunday School lesson. God’s de
sire is that men shall fear the
Lord and respect his fellowman.
To drive recklessly and in excess
of the speed limit is to endanger
our own lives and the lives of
others on the highway. To live
in disregard for God’s laws is
to endanger the rights and well
being -of our fellowmen. If a
warning ticket will not work, a
fine comes next. If this does not
convince us, then we lose our
driver’s license. It we persist in
breaking the law of the highway,
we will end up in jail.
God sends us warnings and in
creased severity of punishment
for our wrongdoings. He is con
cerned about the rights of all
who travel the highway of life.
We need to learn the great les
son of consequences. What I do
affects other people and my
self. God is concerned about this
so much that He will take action
to correct me or to punish me.
Life is so much better, living in
accordance to His will.

gineer.

SOMETHING SOMETHING
#ia%NEW
These without anything borrowed or blue
can give to her Wedding Day the sure promise of
happiness.
Something old? A faith In God such as has been
the foundation of life for millions of Christians
before her. A simple conviction found in the reli
gious instruction she received as a child, nurtured
in regular worship at Church, ready to go with
her through the years.
Something new? A love for the one she has
consented to marry. A tender devotion that will
grow richer and deeper as they share the sunshine
and shadows of life.
With these two —the “something old” that lives
in her soul, and the “something new” that thrills
in her heart—she comes to her husband. And if he
comes to her bearing the same treasures, their
marriage cannot fail!

THE CHURCH FOR ALL...
ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church is the greatest fac
tor on earth for the building of
character and good citizenship.
It is a storehouse of spiritual val
ues. Without a strong Church,
neither democracy nor civiliza
tion can survive. There are four
sound reasons why every person
should attend services regularly
and support the Church. They
are: (1) For his own sake. (2)
For his children’s sake. (3)
the sake of his community and
nation. (4) For the sake of the
Church itself, which needs his
moral and material support.
Plan to go to church regularly
and read your Bible daily.
