THE VISION AT BETHEL
Discussed By
Rev. Wiley Cameron
Scripture: Genesis 28:10-22.
Golden Text: Genesis 28:15.
Jacob, the third of the patri-
archs so frequently mentioned in
the Scripture, was a man that few
would have chosen to be the head
of a nation through which to
achieve the high and holy pur
poses of God. Yet, God is not
limited by human frailty. He does
not despair of us even when we
despair of ourselves. His patience
is never at an end. His resources
are never exhausted. There is an
optimism in God which discerns
the hidden possibilities in the
most unpromising character,
(read I Corin. 1:25-31).
The lesson begins with Jacob
running from God and home. He
had stolen from his brother and
lied to his father. To hide from
his trouble, caused by his own
deceitful scheme, was the answer.
Jacob learned however, as all of
us must learn, we cannot hide
from God. He found that the

presence of God was inescapable.
Jacob learned, as did David, that
he could not flee from God
(Psalm 139). The Bible record
and Christian experience are re
plete with evidence of the tenac
ity and tireless patience of God’s
pursuing love. Francis Thompson
fled from God through the years
until he became a human derelict
sleeping among the down-and-outs
on the Thames Embankment in
London. It was there that the love
of God overtook and mastered
him. In his magnificent poem,
The Hound of Heaven, he inter
prets this experience.
“I fled Him, down the nights
and down the days;
I fled him down the arches of
the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrin
thine ways
Of my own mind; and in the
midst of tears
I hid from Him, and under
running laughter
Up vistaed slopes I sped
And shot, precipitated
Adown Titanic gloom of
chasmed fears
From those strong feet that
followed, followed after.’’
The wonderful difference be
tween Religion and Christianity
is that, Religion is man seeking
God, while Christianity is God
seeking man.
Jacob met God at Bethel—
“ The house of God.” There Jacob
experienced His presence, His
power, and His promises. The
heart of Jacob’s dream was the
revelation of God. Jacob built an
altar as a memorial of this per
sonal, spiritual experience with
God. Jacob’s vow was to worship
and to serve God.

ATTENTION
ALL PARENTS
During school age years medical expenses for
accidents to children are far greater than med
ical expenses for all their combined diseases.
Such expenses strike with sudden swiftness.
There is no warning ever.
For just pennies a day you may own through
the South’s largest accident insurance company
a medical expense policy which is guaranteed
renewable and which will cover practically any
accident which could possibly happen.
The policy will pay in blanket form the cost
of treatments at home, in the doctor’s office, or
in the hospital, up to $250.00 or up to $500.00,
depending upon the nature of the accident, each
time an accident happens.
