One Cent Check
From Uncle Sam
Is Towles Curio
If the United States Treasury
Division of Disbursements won
ders whatever happened to Check
No. 6,267,502, dated January 9,
1947, W. M. Towles of Jackson
has it. It was too expensive co
cash, he says.
The check was made to Mr.
Towles to correct the difference
in the amount on deposit when
he transferred some war bonds
while in government service. At
that time his address was 1224
Holden Dr., Augusta.
An Augusta banker took one
look at the check and said, “give
me nine cents and I’ll cash it.”
“Never,” Mr. Towles replied,
and sent the check to his mother,
Mrs. C. A. Towles, who kept it
until her death recently.
The one-cent check makes for
good conversation and is mute
evidence of the government being
a stickler for rules and regula
tions. Somebody should have paid
Mr. Towles out of petty cash!
