IKE POUT IIKOM THE FOXFEDERACY:
Hood’s Third Attack Fails;
Yankee Cavalry Raids Broken Up
BY ROBERT STONEDALE
ATLANTA, Georgia, July 31,
1864. Confederate forces com
manded by Lieutenant General
John B. Hood have broken up
Union cavalry attacks designed to
interrupt supply lines into At
lanta but have been unable to
halt a Federal extension to the
west of the city which is threat
ening to cut the Macon railroad.
In the third bold attack he has
ordered within 11 days, General
Hood has succeeded in forcing
the enemy to construct field forti
fications in the vicinity of Ezra
Church but has failed to break
through any part of Sherman’s
large command.
Upon learning that the enemy
was moving west of Atlanta day
before yesterday, the Command
ing General ordered Lieutenant
General Stephen D. Lee (who
replaced General Cheatham at the
head of Hood’s old corps earlier
this week) to take up positions
on the Lick-Skillet Road leading
to Ezra Church. While Lee’s
Corps blunted the Federal ad
vance Lieutenant General Alex
ander P. Stewart was to swing
behind and attack on Lee’s left.
Brown’s Division, supported by
three brigades from Clayton’s,
struck the Union XV Corps head
on during the afternoon and a
costly meeting engagement fol
lowed. The Federal repeating
rifles slaughtered the leading
regiments and a swift enemy
counter-attack slammed into the
Confederate regiments still on
the march. But deployment was
also swift and battle raged along
the road as the remainder of
the Confederate Corps poured
around the enemy flank.
But Sherman’s veterans stood
their ground; confident of heavy
reinforcement. Plunging teams
hurried battery after battery of
superb Yankee artillery to their
support. Two lines of bucking
cannon tore away Lee’s front
line. General Stewart led his
Corps to the attack and went
down in the front line. As twi
light approached, fresh Federal
columns from Sherman’s inex
haustable reserves appeared on
the flanks. The volume of their
fire was indescribable and the
pressure was too great. General
Hood ordered the costly attacks
stopped but his losses of more
than 2500 precious men were far
greater than the enemy’s.
While the infantry was bleeding
along Lick-Skillet Road, Confed
erate cavalry has been enjoying
great success. Earlier this week,
Sherman sent two enormous ca
valry columns on raids designed
to interrupt Atlanta’s communi
cations. Both have been utterly
wrecked.
Several thousand Yankee
troops were driven away from Ma
con yesterday afternoon by hast
ily mobilized militia. The enemy
then attempted to reach Ander
sonville where they undoubtedly
planned to liberate the 34,000
Yankee prisoners now held there
under light guard. Brigadier Gen
eral Alfred Iverson’s Georgia
cavalry surprised and surrounded
the Federals at Sunshine Creek
last night, and after a sharp
fight, captured the commander of
all of Sherman’s cavalry, Major
General George Stoneman, and
700 Yankee troopers. Those who
were not killed or captured have
been scattered across the country
side.
The second Yankee column was
attacked yesterday near Newnan,
Georgia by Major General Joseph
Wheeler at the head of five
brigades. Although these Yankee
troopers destroyed several miles
of railroad track before General
Wheeler caught up with them,
they have paid heavily for the
damage. Five hundred of them
were killed or captured between
2 and 2:30 yesterday afternoon
and the Federal pack train has
been captured together with two
guns and 190 horses. General
Wheeler has driven remnants of
the second Yankee column across
the Chattahoochee.
It is certain that Sherman will
again attempt to strike at the
Macon railroad in order to break
General Hood’s only supply line
Covington Furniture Company,
Covington, Ga., to satisfy a mort
gage against James B. McDowell
in favor of Covington Furniture
Company in the amount of $721.-
94.
V. H. HAM, Sheriff
Butts County, Georgia
THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
into Atlanta. It is doubtful that
he will gain any success with
his inferior cavalry but with the
infantry odds better than two to
one in his favor he will have no
difficulty in extending his flanks
far beyond General Hood’s lines.
Having suffered losses in excess
of 10,000 men in ten days, there
seems little chance that General
Hood can hazard another offen
sive blow.
