On The Farm
Production Front
By
B. B. CAMPBELL, County Agent,
Butts County
Butts County Fair is scheduled
for October 5-10. It has been
necessary to make several
changes in the fair for this year.
Rules for field and horticultural
crops exhibited by farmers and
4-H club members will be sub
stantially the same. Exhibits will
be due at the —fair ground on
Monday, October sth, and will be
judged on Tuesday, October 6th.
Items for which prizes will be
offered are about the same. This
is the time of year to select cot
ton, corn, and other field and
horticultural crops for exhibits.
In connection with the live
stock show, cattle will be brought
in on Tuesday and judged Thurs
day night instead of Thursday
morning. Health certificates will
be required for all animals
brought to the fair except steers
that will be sold for the market.
An additional event this year will
be 4-H and FFA Steer Show and
Sale which will be held on Fri
day, night, October 9th. Consider
able changes have been made in
classes of livestock to better re
flect our modern livestock pro
gram. Grand Champion and Re
serve Champion will be awarded
by breeds for dairy cattle and
classes on cattle will be further
sub-divided to promote better
judging and showmanship. Con
siderable improvements are being
planned for the livestock barn to
facilitate the handling of the
animals. Now is the time to plan
your livestock exhibits for the
local fair.
The Southeastern Fair in At
lanta will be from October Ist to
10th. On Saturday, October 3rd,
Guernsey judging both open and
junior show. Hereford cattle will
be shown on Tuesday, October
fith. Saturday, October 10th is
4-H Day at Southeastern Fair.
Georgia State Fair in Macon
will be held October 19-24. Geor
gia 4-H Dairy Show in connection
with Georgia State Fair will be
held on Thursday, October 22nd
at 2:00 p. m. Saturday, October
24th, will be 4-H Day at the
Georgia State Fair.
Reports are being received of
infestation in forage crops of
armyworms or caterpillars. Sevin
is probably one of the safest and
most effective insecticides for
food and feed crops since it can
be used up to the day of harvest.
IMi pounds of technical grade
material per acre is recommended.
Reports indicate a continued
build up of both boll weevil and
boll worm population in cotton
fields. The situation with refer
ence to boll worms could become
more severe than boll weevils,
especially in late cotton. There is
also considerable reports in parts
of the state on boll rot in rank
cotton due to cloudy weather.
Cotton fields should be observed
closely for these conditions.
General crop reports as of Aug
ust Ist indicates yields of 42
bushels per acre for corn, one
bushel less per acre than the
record yield in 1963. However,

Coin Shortage
Is Felt Here
The Jackson National Bank,
like every other bank in the
nation, reports they are feeling
the effects of the serious nation
wide shortage of coins. In fact,
President J. W. O’Neal, Sr., re
ports that the situation became
almost “acute” during the past
few weeks with the added thou
sands coming into the county be
cause of Camp Meeting at the In
dian Springs Holiness Camp
Grounds.
Mr. O’Neal revealed that in the
past two weeks the bank was
hard pressed to supply the cafe
teria at the Camp Grounds with
coins and the manager reported
after feeding a record breaking
crowd one Sunday that correct
change became almost nonexist
tent for their cashier.
Mr. O’Neal said that for
months halves, dimes, pennies and
nickles have been in short supply,
but all coins are hard to get at

present. This shortage works a
hardship on the bank’s customers
and also on the bank since it
makes it impossible to supply cus
tomers with coins as freely as in
the past.
Behind the shortage of coins
are several factors, the president
said. Probably the greatest are
the vending machines, sales tax
which require a great amount of
change and record spending by a
growing population.
On some orders to the Federal
Reserve System, only a small per
cent of the order is filled, Mr.
O’Neal said. This is true of all
banks, not just the Jackson Nat
ional Bank.
Because of the shortage, the U.
S. Treasury has recently announc
ed an intensified program t o
double the nation’s rate of coin
production within a year and
raise it by 75 per cent during the
next six months.
By next June, the program will
boost coin production to an
annual rate of over nine billion
new coins—more than double the
4.3 billion level for fiscal 1964
and triple the three billion level
for fiscal 1961.
