City Voters
May Register
Until Sept. 25
Voters’ registration records
for the City of Jackson will be
closed on September 25, 1964, at
5 p. m., according to an announ
cement this week by Mayor C. B.
Brown, Jr.
No voter who has not register
ed before this September 25th
deadline will be allowed to vote
4n the November election, Mr.
Brown said. The Mayor also
pointed out that all persons de
siring to become city voters
must be registered as a county
voter. This may be done in the
court house in the office of Mrs.
Mary Will Hearn, Tax Collector.
Mayor Brown pointed out that
the registrar’s books will be open
every day during the week and
until noon on Saturday for those
desiring to register. Mrs. Mary Jo
Brooks, City Clerk, will register
those who are properly qualified.
To be properly qualified a
voter must have lived in the city
4xty days prior to the election, in
the county six months and in the
state one year. All persons regis
tering must be 18 years of age or
older before the city election.
Anyone who is in doubt about
their status is advised by Mayor
Brown to check with Mrs, Brooks
at the City Hall.
Bids on Valdosta
Welcome Center
Opened Sept. 3
The opening for bids for con
struction of the Valdosta Wel
come Center will be September 3.
The Center will be the sixth for
the State under the sponsorship
of the Tourist Division of the
Georgia Department of Industry
and Trade.
This Center will be the largest,
located on eight acres of land.
The Center will be approximately
three and a half miles north of
the Florida borderline on 1-75
South.
The Center will incorporate
Georgia granite and wood beams
in its construction and there will
be a small movie theatre where
visitors can view various films on
the State.
Other Georgia Welcome Cen
ters are in operation in Sylvania
and Savannah. Plans are to open
the Lavonia Center in the autumn.
The Ringgold Center will be open
ed when 1-75 North is further
completed. The Columbus Jaycees
are remodeling the Lions Club
Golfhouse into a Welcome Center
to welcome tourists on the Ala
bama border.

Speaks Aug. 28th
In McDonough
Lester Maddox, nationally
known Atlanta restaurant ope
rator who recently closed his res
taurant rather than integrate, will
be the feature speaker at a bar
becue chicken dinner Friday,
August 28, in McDonough at
Craig Field. Mr. Maddox’s address
is scheduled for 7 p. m.
The event is sponsored by the
Henry County Athletic Associ
ation with the chicken dinners, $1
per plate, to be served beginning
at six o’clock.

Told By Russell
WASHINGTON,—Sen. Richard
B. Russell has hailed the new
Southeastern Water Laboratory
to be built at Athens as a sig
nificant step in the fight against
pollution of Georgia’s rivers and
lakes.
Russell made the statement in
announcing the award by the
General —Services Administration
of a construction contract for the
U. S. Public Health Service re
search facility at the University
of Georgia. The contract went to
an Atlanta firm, Inland Builders,
Inc., for $2,145,000.
Total cost of completing and
equipping the facility will be
about $2.5 million. It is scheduled
to be completed by late 1965, and
will be staffed by 150 scientists,
engineers and technicians. John

will direct activities of the facil
ity.
The laboratory will study over
all problems involving water
quality in Georgia and the South
east with a view toward develop
ing new technologies and methods
for controlling pollution. It also
will assist state and local agencies
concerned with pollution prob
lems.
The laboratory will coordinate
its research efforts with those of
the University. Senator Russell,
second ranking Democrat on the
Senate Appropriations Commmit
tee, was instrumental in locating
the facility in Georgia and in ob
taining funds to support the
Health Service’s anti-pollution
activities.
In commenting on the contract
award, Russell said:

Friends of Mrs. Ralph Garr,
Mrs. Paul Maddox, Messrs. George
and Joe Gilmore sympathize with
them in the death of their niece,
Miss Annie Lois Meredith, of
Claverack, N. Y.
Born in Jackson ,the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. J. Russell Mere
dith and granddaughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Gilmore
and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Meredith,
she spent part of her childhood
here in Jackson.
Survivors include in addition to
her aunts and —uncles here, her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Russell
Meredith; two brothers, Richard
Meredith of Philadelphia, Pa. and
Palmer Meredith of Tenafly, N.
J.; one nephew and two nieces.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, August 22, in Claver
ack, N. Y.
